Squarespace Review

Bottom Line:
Unlimited bandwidth and storage with all of its plans; extensive options for e-commerce; top-notch customer service

Full Review:
Squarespace is one of the biggest names in website building, and with good reason. Its reputation is backed by several awards and its service features many powerful customization tools. Squarespace is also an excellent option for those looking to use a website for an online store, as its e-commerce tools allow you to process payments, refunds and chargebacks as well as accept donations and coupons.

Plans and Pricing

Squarespace offers three different plan types, all of which include one year of free domain registration with a new domain, if you sign up for a one-year subscription, as well as a mobile version of your website.

Personal Plan
The Personal plan costs $12/month annually or $16/month on a month-to-month basis. This plan gives you 20 pages, unlimited bandwidth and storage, the option to add up to two contributors, galleries, blogs, fully integrated e-commerce, the ability to sell unlimited products and the option to accept donations.

Business Plan
The most popular plan, according to the service, is the Business plan which costs $18/month with a one-year commitment or $26/month otherwise. It includes all of the features from the Personal plan as well as unlimited pages, unlimited contributors, a business email with Google and $100 in Google AdWords credit.

Commerce Plan
This plan comes in two tiers, Basic and Advanced. The Basic plan provides all features of the Business plan, label printing via ShipStation and integrated accounting by Xero. The Advanced plan provides more features, including automatic discounts and abandoned cart autorecovery. The Basic plan costs $26/month annually or $30/month if you pay monthly, and the Advanced plan costs $40/month annually or $46/month on a monthly basis.

Getting Started

Signing up with Squarespace is simple and painless — you don't even need a credit card to start using its 14-day free trial. Enter your name, email address and password, and you'll instantly receive a welcome email with confirmation of your free trial, your URL and your log-in information. The welcome page will walk you through a few getting started questions, where you'll select the purpose of your site (business, personal, nonprofit or e-commerce), enter your site title and your business information, such as the address and phone number. After this, you can select your template and begin building your website.

Creating Your Website

The template selection isn't sparse, but it isn't very vast either. There are different categories to choose from, including business, portfolio, store, musician, restaurant and weddings, and you can preview what each one will look like on both desktop and mobile before making your selection. You can change your template at any time when editing your website as well. Squarespace will generate default pages for you depending on which type of theme you select. For example, with a restaurant theme, it will generate pages for Information, Menu, Locations, News and Read Me. You can edit, re-order or delete these pages once you begin editing, if you wish.

Editing Your Website

Squarespace's web editor hosts a sleek interface with a user-friendly toolbar on the left-hand side of your website. The Design button features many tools to edit your website. Logo and Title allows you to edit or add a site title, a tag line and a logo for your business or brand. You have the option to upload your logo from your computer or create a simple one using the logo maker on Squarespace. This logo maker tool allows you to add a tag line and various different clip-art type objects. You can also order merchandise with this logo, such as t-shirts and business cards.

The style editing options that it features are extremely detailed. You can change everything from your background color and background image to borders, text and the header and footer on your website. A really nice feature that Squarespace has is the option to upload your own font if you don't want to use one of the fonts it offers. There's also a handy button to reset everything to default if you aren't happy with your edits, as well as the option to enable or disable your background image on mobile. You can toggle between the different pages on your website with ease and switch between desktop and mobile to make sure everything looks the way you want it to.

Other Features

In addition to these extensive customization tools, Squarespace also features a few additional tools that users may find helpful, especially for e-commerce.

Social Sharing Logo
This tool is something that many other website builders do not feature. It's optional and will post to your social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, whenever you update your website, at the frequency of your choosing. You can choose to share things like your home page, photo gallery, blog post or a new product in your store, and the Social Sharing Logo tool will automatically generate an image to go along with your post, even if the URL doesn't contain one.

Social Media
Squarespace hosts both social media share and social media follow buttons. So your visitors can share your content directly to their friends and followers, as well as "like" or "follow" your business' social media channels. It isn't limited in the number of accounts you can connect, either — Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and StumbleUpon are just a few of the social media networks you can connect to your website.

There are four steps that Squarespace walks you through when setting up your store online. You'll be prompted to first add products, then create shipping options, connect your Stripe account and, finally, push the store live. To accept payments using Squarespace, you will need to create and connect a Stripe account first, as this is the service it uses as the integrated payment processor. Additionally, your store won't be live until you have connected your Stripe account to Squarespace. You can view your payment activity with filters such as payments, refunds, failures and chargebacks. You can also add options for donations, shipping methods, coupons and taxes (which will automatically be calculated depending on location). The current currencies it supports are USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, AUD and CHF.

You can view your incoming traffic hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. The metrics tool also shows you what percentage of your visitors are coming to your site on desktop and what percentage of them are accessing it from a mobile device, which we thought was a really nice touch.

Customer Support

While Squarespace doesn't offer a phone number for its customer support team, it doesn't really need one. The help page hosts a vast knowledge base, video tutorials and FAQs. Its live chat is available Monday through Friday from 3 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. You can also contact customer support via email, which claims to be available 24/7/365; we found this to be extremely useful. When we contacted Squarespace with some questions we had, we got an immediate confirmation that our email was received, and our email was actually answered within a few short minutes. The representative was very helpful in answering all of our questions and we were pleasantly surprised at the quick response time.

With all of its additional features, there isn't much that Squarespace doesn't offer in website building. The extensive options for e-commerce and exceptional customer service really made it stand out as a top contender. The only real complaint we had was that it doesn't offer as many different themes are we would have liked, but with the 14-day free trial, it's definitely worth checking out.
