Jimdo Review

Jimdo
Rating:
Bottom Line:
Clean, user-friendly interface; forever-free plan has little to no advanced features; excellent customer service; lacking in additional customization tools

Full Review:
Jimdo is an easy-to-use website builder that features a free plan as well as paid plans. If you're going to need more than just the bare basics, you'll want to sign up for one of its paid plans, which require a one-year commitment.

Plans and Pricing

Both Jimdo's free and paid plans include professional templates to choose from, built-in social media tools, mobile optimization, blog add-ons, unlimited pages and no transaction fees on any orders from your online store; it also provides free shipping on large orders for your customers. Its free plan also gives you 500 MB of storage, one password-protected area and up to five items to add to your online store. The free plan includes Jimdo ads on your website as well its name in your domain name (e.g. yoursite.jimdo.com).

JimdoPro Plan
The JimdoPro plan is "perfect for creatives, freelancers and bloggers" and costs $7.50/month with an annual subscription. This plan allows for one custom domain, one email account, 5 GB of storage, five password-protected areas, traffic statistics, a custom footer and up to 15 online store items.

JimdoBusiness Plan
The JimdoBusiness plan is $20/month for a year and includes everything the Pro plan does, but gives you a free custom domain, 20 email accounts, unlimited storage as well as an unlimited number of password-protected areas and store items.

It's important to note that Jimdo currently doesn't offer a monthly plan option, so you will be required to pay for a full year upfront with either of these two plans. Additionally, the paid plan options incorporate XML site mapping and Google Indexing as SEO features.

Getting Started

Before you can create an account with Jimdo, you are required to select a design for your template. There are different categories that you can use to refine your search — such as business, store, portfolio and personal — however, all of these options were rather limited. It was disappointing to not have many choices, but we were given more options to choose from after we completed the sign-up process. There's also no preview option here for the templates you are presented with, which means you cannot view the template before you select it. After making your selection, which you can change later if you wish, you will enter your website name, your email address and password. A few minutes later, you can expect an email in your inbox that will prompt you to confirm your email address, after which you can start editing and customizing your site.

Creating Your Website

Once you log into your account, you can browse more template options. There's also a really helpful tool that filters templates for your specific needs. For example, you can choose from different categories as a general filter, and even filter for more detailed options, such as whether you want to create an online store, if you want your website to include a menu and whether you want sidebars on your site. There were a lot more themes to choose from here than there were on the sign-up page. You also have the option to preview the templates before confirming your selection, and there's a step-by-step video you can click to watch if you wish to get a quick few tips on redesigning your template.

Editing Your Website

You can change your template at any time while editing your website, and most of the templates even feature additional color scheme variations, which we thought was a nice touch. The web editor on Jimdo shows all of your pages at the top and a toolbar for editing tools on the right-hand side of the page. The pages are automatically generated, depending on what type of template you select, but can be edited, rearranged or deleted at any time. We chose a business template and the pages it generated for us were Home, Services and Contact.

The Style tool allows you to change color schemes for individual sections on your pages and features different fonts that you can choose from for both your headings and your body text. If you want to change your background, it gives you many different options for doing so. You can create a custom background, by uploading a single photo, a slideshow of photos or a video, or you can choose from the preloaded Jimdo backgrounds. There are over 300 Jimdo backgrounds to choose from, however, some are only available for its paid plan users. All of the backgrounds it gives you to choose from are very basic and elementary in their designs. While other website builders give you stock photos to choose from that match more closely with your website's theme, Jimdo does not offer this, which makes its background selections rather disappointing.

Other Features

There are only a few additional features that Jimdo offers, the most notable of which are its e-commerce options for creating an online store.

Commerce
Jimdo gives you many settings you can add or edit to build your online store. You can add different payment options for your customers, detail shipping costs, state your terms and return policy as well as customize a checkout form and confirmation page. It's important to note, however, that the order confirmation page is only available to those who have a JimdoBusiness account.

Statistics
The statistics are only available on the JimdoPro and JimdoBusiness plans. This is a built-in tool that shows you how many visitors come to your site each day. You can filter it by which pages were visited, which search engine landed a visitor on your website and which keyword they used to find you on that search engine.

Social Media
Jimdo gives you many different social media and other accounts to connect and link to your website, such as Facebook, email, Twitter, Evernote, Tumblr, Google+ and several more. You can also change the color scheme, size and shape of these social media buttons. The only social media platform that you can sync a live feed to your website of is Twitter.

Customer Support

There are several "getting started" guides you can browse through that help you with starting your website, setting up an online store and other questions you may have. A feature we found especially helpful was a dropdown menu that allows you to search for specific categories related to topics that may interest you. There is no phone option for support, but Jimdo does have an email and live chat option. Live chat is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT. There was no wait time with live chat and the representative was very friendly and knowledgeable. We were also pleasantly surprised to receive an email a few minutes after our live chat session that contained a full transcript of the conversation.

Conclusion

Jimdo lacks in some of the key features that many website builders have, and some of the customization options for its templates were underwhelming. That said, it is very user-friendly and is a fairly decent option if you're looking for a free website builder, since it does offer a forever free plan.
