Going out to eat, whether you’re grabbing a quick bite at a corner diner or lingering over an elaborate four-course meal, is a cornerstone of American life. If you’re someone who likes to check out new places near and far, or simply prefers to visit your favorite neighborhood spot for its killer spaghetti special every Tuesday night, then paying with a rewards card that earns you extra cash back or points when you pay at a restaurant is a must. One of the best cards out there for diners is the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express (a NextAdvisor advertiser), which earns a stellar 2X rewards points at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations.

We were recently invited to experience the food of Fiorella, one of San Francisco’s best local neighborhood gems, at a dinner event put on by American Express and The Infatuation, a restaurant review service which serves a growing number of cities around the globe. Part of an ongoing partnership between American Express and The Infatuation, this is the second year of the dinner series, which highlights top restaurants in a handful of cities across the country. The dinner was timed with the release of The Infatuation’s digital San Francisco restaurant guide, which spotlights under-the-radar spots that are best known and loved by the locals who live in the neighborhoods around them. Attending the event got us curious about what other benefits the Premier Rewards Gold Card has to offer, so we decided to put the spotlight on it and find out. Read on to learn about the many perks of this card and determine if it’s one you’ll want to pull out at your next lunch date.

Perks of the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express

If you’re on the market for a card that offers a wide array of top-notch benefits, the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express is an attractive option to consider. Bear in mind, this card requires that you pay off your balance in full each month, and it does carry a hefty annual fee ($195/year, but it’s waived for your first year). Additionally, you must have good to excellent credit (usually considered a credit score of 700 or higher) in order to be approved. If those aren’t deal-breakers, then you’re in for plenty of treats when you’ve got this card in your wallet.

Earning points with the Premier Rewards Gold Card is a breeze for both jetsetters and urban backyard explorers, as every $1 spent on airfare booked directly through an airline nets you 3 Membership Rewards Points, and — as noted earlier — every $1 spent at U.S. restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets nets you 2 Membership Rewards Points. On top of that, you can earn a special intro bonus of 25,000 points by spending $2,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of owning your card. All purchases outside the 3X and 2X point categories earn 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent, and you can rest assured that your points never expire. They can be redeemed for travel, entertainment, dining or merchandise, or even transferred to select frequent traveler programs. As a cardholder, you’ll be eligible for the Gold Card Events program, which provides early access to preferred seating at sought-after events.

When you travel, you can also count on your Premier Rewards Gold Card to have your back. You’ll get a statement credit of up to $100 each calendar year to cover the cost of baggage fees at one airline and any other incidentals as well as a $75 credit to cover qualifying charges and a complimentary room upgrade upon arrival (if available) when you stay at hotels within The Hotel Collection by American Express. Other travel-related perks include roadside assistance, car rental loss and damage insurance, baggage insurance and access to a global assistance hotline. If you travel outside the U.S., you can use your Premier Rewards Gold Card freely without worrying about paying foreign transaction fees.

What are some other cards that earn rewards on dining?

If the Premier Rewards Gold Card isn’t for you, but you still want to earn rewards when you eat out, you’re in luck. Here are few other options to consider:

Capital One® SavorOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card Get the absolute most out of your dining experiences with the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card, which offers unlimited 3% cash back on dining and entertainment, 2% cash back at grocery stores and 1% on everything else. In addition to no annual fee or foreign transaction fees, you’ll enjoy a 15-month 0% intro APR on both purchases and balance transfers (with a 3% balance transfer fee). Rewards never expire, and you can redeem them at any time for any amount in the form of a statement credit, check or gift card. Sweetening the deal, spend just $500 on purchases in the first 3 months and you’ll get $150 back! The suite of benefits for cardholders includes extended warranty protection, price protection on items they buy with the card, travel protection and a complimentary concierge service. Keep in mind, like the two cards before it, you’ll need good to excellent credit for approval.

Discover it chrome is a great option, as it earns cardholders 2% cash back on purchases at restaurants and gas stations (up to $1,000 combined quarterly, then it’s 1%) and 1% cash back on everything else. This card doesn’t charge an annual fee or foreign transaction fees, and it offers 0% intro APR for 14 months on both purchases and balance transfers. There is a 3% balance transfer fee to keep in mind. You can redeem the rewards you earn at any time for any amount, including directly at checkout when you shop at Amazon.com, and as a special bonus, all the cash back earned within your first year will be matched by Discover when the year comes to an end. That means you’d get an additional $400 if you earned $400 in the previous year, for a total of $800 cash back in your first year. Discover also offers cardholders a number of membership perks, like special shopping discounts and security features. The cherry on top for this credit card is that it’s available to those with average credit or better, which might be a relief for those whose credit is not so perfect.
