LifeLock® is not a new name to identity theft protection, considering the company has been around since 2005 and has continued to offer complete protection to its members. The service provides top-notch identity theft protection and 3-bureau credit reports and scores, accessible each year; however it is somewhat pricey — even with the first-year discount (terms apply) — when compared to other top-rated services.


NextAdvisor visitors can take advantage of a discount of up to 25% for the first year (terms apply), bringing the cost of LifeLock Ultimate Plus® down to $24.74/month* when you pay for one year upfront ($296.90/year), or $26.99/month if you choose to pay monthly. After the first year, the price increases to $339.99/year for the annual plan ($28.34/month) or $34.99/month if you’re on the monthly plan. LifeLock® does not offer an all-in-one family plan, but it does offer protection for children with LifeLock Junior. This plan allows you to add your children to an existing adult’s LifeLock Ultimate Plus® plan for an added cost per child.

If you’d like to pay less per month, the LifeLock Advantage® plan is $17.99/month when paid month-to-month or $16.50/month on annual prepay for the first year (increasing to $22.99/month or $19.99/month afterwards, respectively), but it only offers single-bureau credit monitoring. Unlike other top-rated services, there is no free trial, so you’ll need to choose a monthly plan to see if it’s for you, if you aren’t certain.


Signing up for LifeLock Ultimate Plus® is quick and easy. Once you’ve entered some basic personal information, such as your address and social security number, you have the option to add family members. If you choose to add other adults or children at this time, you will see these changes reflected when you enter your payment information. Once payment information has been entered, the service walks you through the personal information registration process so it can actively monitor for any potentially fraudulent use. Although it’s easy to put this step off, you shouldn’t because inputting your information will ensure that LifeLock® will begin protecting your identity.

Identity Theft Protection

LifeLock Ultimate Plus® offers a complete list of identity theft protection features that includes everything from lost wallet protection to dark web monitoring and daily 3-bureau credit report monitoring. The protection begins with the LifeLock Identity Alert® technology, which uses a network† of unique data sources to provide a broader range of protection than just credit report monitoring. You’ll be alerted if any suspicious activity is found, such as if your personal information is being used to open new credit cards, wireless services, retail credits, utilities, check orders and reorders, mortgage loans, non-credit related payday loans and auto loans. Alerts are sent via email, phone or SMS text. Your online account will also be updated with any alert information. It’s easy to change how LifeLock® contacts you through the account management section.

Next, LifeLock Ultimate Plus® includes active scanning of dark web monitoring to make sure your name (including your maiden name, if applicable), credit card numbers, driver’s license, social security number, home address and email are not being sold or traded to identity thieves. In the event that your information is found, you will be alerted via email, phone, SMS text and/or mobile app. LifeLock® also searches national databases for new address information and notifies you if your USPS address has been changed, a common tactic of identity thieves.

In addition, LifeLock Ultimate Plus®’ data breach notifications feature informs you whenever there is a publicly reported larger-scale data breach so you can take action to help protect your personal information before the breached information causes damage to your identity. To help protect your financial information from fraud, LifeLock® offers credit card, checking and savings account alerts that notify you when cash withdrawals, balance transfers or other transactions surpass a certain threshold. The default amount is $200, however you can adjust this any time by logging into your LifeLock® account online. Similarly, investment account activity alerts notify you when there is specific activity on any of your investment accounts. It should be noted that in order to take advantage of either of these financial alerts, you need to link these accounts to your LifeLock® membership by logging into your account online.

LifeLock Ultimate Plus® also includes monitoring of file-sharing websites and surveillance of public and court records to verify that your information is not being used by identity thieves. LifeLock Ultimate Plus® will also alert you when new savings or checking accounts are opened in your name by scanning new bank account applications.

LifeLock Junior monitors for your child’s information on applications for credit cards, wireless services, retail credit, utilities, mortgages, auto and payday loans, and alerts you if suspicious activity is detected. It also monitors your child’s social security number to verify that no credit files are associated with it, and scans more than 10,000 criminal websites on the dark web to verify that your child’s personal information is not being sold. Since children and young adults often use peer-to-peer sharing websites, LifeLock® also searches these networks for exposure of your child’s personal information. And, in the event that your child is a victim of identity theft as a member of LifeLock Junior, your child will be protected by LifeLock®’s $1 million guarantee.

Another protection LifeLock® offers that families will appreciate is the sex offender notification, which alerts you to registered sex offenders within your zip code. It will also let you know if a sex offender tries to register using your address.

Credit Report Monitoring Information

On top of the protection detailed above, LifeLock Ultimate Plus® offers 3-bureau — TransUnion, Equifax and Experian — daily credit report monitoring and monthly tracking of your Equifax credit score. LifeLock® will alert you in the event that any credit inquiries or changes — such as new lines of credit — are made to any of the three of your credit reports.

In addition to the daily credit report monitoring, LifeLock Ultimate Plus® also provides you with instant online access to your 3-bureau credit reports and scores upon signup. These reports and scores are updated annually at the time of the anniversary of your signup with the company. Additionally, LifeLock Ultimate Plus® provides you with monthly updates of your Equifax credit score.

Identity Theft Assistance

In the event that you fall victim to identity theft, LifeLock Ultimate Plus® connects you to a certified resolution specialist who will work with you throughout the restoration process for no additional charge. On top of access to a specialist, LifeLock® also offers what it refers to as its million dollar protection package**, which provides up to $1 million to cover reimbursement of stolen funds, coverage for lawyers and experts and personal expense compensation for LifeLock Ultimate Plus® members (the maximum is $100,000 for LifeLock Advantage® members).

Although the protection package is a good tool to have, we found that most value lies in the access to the specialists, because the real cost of identity theft is the loss of ability to get credit for an extended period of time as well as the time and effort it takes to restore your good name, and these specialists help you resolve those issues as soon as possible.

Customer Service

LifeLock® offers some of the most generous customer service hours we’ve seen. Customer service representatives are available by phone 24 hours per day, seven days per week. You can also contact customer service representatives via email and traditional mail. We found all forms to be effective ways to communicate and found the LifeLock® customer service representatives to be very helpful, even when we had some difficult questions for them.


Overall, LifeLock® is a pioneer in identity theft protection and still offers a good value in the category. LifeLock Ultimate Plus®’ service is complete with advanced identity theft protection features, annual 3-bureau credit report monitoring and scores and monthly updates to your Equifax credit score. Although we wish the service provided credit report updates more frequently than once per year and offered a free trial, it is still a solid identity theft protection service backed by 24/7 customer support and a fraud resolution team.
