Our Detailed Review of This Card

It isn’t always easy to find a student credit card with great rewards and perks. Fortunately for students looking to build their credit history, the card has all the bells and whistles: earn cash back rewards, enjoy a 0% intro purchase APR and benefit from a variety of other perks, all while building your credit score with responsible use.

The card will earn you cash back rewards for the purchases you’re probably already making, with an automatic (no need to sign up each quarter) N/A cash back on purchases at gas stations and restaurants (up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter) as well as N/A cash back on all other purchases. Earned cash back never expires and it can be redeemed for cash back in any amount at any time, or instantly used to pay for an purchase.

Plus, the cash back you earn also factors into your intro bonus. That’s because Discover will match all of the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year as a new cardholder. For example, if you earn $100 at the end of your first year with the card, Discover will match that with $100 for a total of $200 cash back! On top of that, the card even rewards you for maintaining a high GPA with its Good Grades Rewards: you’ll earn a $20 statement credit every school year your GPA is 3.0 or higher for up to the next 5 years.

In addition to earning cash back, students will have a chance to get used to paying via credit with N/A months of N/A% intro APR on purchases (after that, the N/A rate will apply). That gives you a good amount of time to get used to managing your balance before you’ll pay a cent of interest. Plus, the card has other features that make it fantastic for those learning to use credit: there’s no penalty APR for paying late, no late fee on your first late payment and no overlimit fee.

You’ll also receive a free Credit Scorecard, which not only includes a FICO® credit score, but also provides information on factors that impact your credit score, like number of accounts, length of credit, number of inquiries, percentage of credit in use and number of missed payments. Knowing this information can help you improve your credit scores.

Rounding it all out, the card also charges no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. Foreign transaction fees often range between 3% and 5% of every purchase made outside the United States, so eliminating those fees makes this card great for international travel, whether that be for vacations or a study abroad program. Those perks, along with its cash back and 0% intro purchase APR, make the card the perfect starter card for college students.
