Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® Review

Our Detailed Review of This Card

Apply for This Card

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® (a NextAdvisor advertiser) is a solid choice for those who would like to earn free flights on American Airlines.

To start, cardholders will earn 2 miles per $1 spent on gas, at restaurants and on American Airline flights, as well as 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases. Earning extra miles for non-airline purchases, like gas and eating out, is uncommon for branded airline cards, so this is a big plus.

On top of that, cardholders will earn a 50,000-mile bonus after making $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening*. Our Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis indicated a flight redemption value of $1.25 per $100 spent, a decent but not remarkable payback. The hotel redemption value of $0.66 wasn't as good, something to keep in mind if you plan on using the card to earn free hotel nights. Rewards can be redeemed for free flights and upgrades on American Airlines (and other participating airlines), car rentals, hotel stays and more.

Additional perks include the first checked bag is free for you and up to four companions traveling with you on the same reservation, a 25% savings on inflight food and beverage purchases, no foreign transaction fees and priority boarding on American Airlines flights. The card also has an annual fee of $99, waived for first 12 months*.

Overall, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® is best for those who are loyal to American Airlines and want to take advantage of the airline-specific perks the card offers. If you're in the market for a card that has more flexible redemption options and hefty intro bonus, take a look at the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.
