United MileagePlus® Explorer Card Review

United MileagePlus® Explorer Card
Bottom Line:
Good choice for United flyers who want to earn free flights with great perks

Full Review:
United MileagePlus® Explorer Card offers unlimited mile accumulation, a big perk for users who like to earn miles for their purchases. And users can put those miles to good use, as our recent Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis indicated a flight redemption value of $1.24 per $100 spent. This means for every $100 you spend on the card, you'll be able to redeem approximately $1.24 on flights. Users will also enjoy the other goodies like earning 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open, priority boarding privileges, checking their first bag for free on United flights and no foreign transaction fees.

Highlights from Chase
  • 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open
  • $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95.
  • Check your first bag for free (a savings of up to $100 per roundtrip) when you use your Card to purchase your ticket
  • Enjoy priority boarding privileges and visit the United Club℠ with 2 one-time passes each year for your anniversary
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Earn 2 miles per $1 spent on tickets purchased from United, and 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Your miles don't expire as long as your credit card account is open, with no limit to the number of miles you can earn

Redeem Rewards
  • Miles can be redeemed for flights, hotel stays, shopping, dining and more.
  • Flight Redemption: The United MileagePlus® program lets users book travel on both United and their Star Alliance partner airlines. You can also use their award points to travel on a myriad of other airlines, including Air China, Air New Zealand and US Airways. The point cost for United flights varies by whether it is a "Saver" or a "Standard." Saver awards are available for a limited number of seats per flight, while Standard awards enable you to fly whenever seats are available for the flight and class of service you want.
  • Hotel Redemption: The MileagePlus® program lets users book free hotel stays at a vast array of hotels. There doesn't seem to be any particular sort of affiliation, and during our research we noticed hotel options ranging from the Hyatt Regency, Four Points by Sheraton and the Westin to the Holiday Inn and Best Western.
