Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Review

Chase Sapphire Reserve℠
Bottom Line:
Earn unlimited 3x points on travel and dining; 50K bonus points opportunity; 1:1 point transfer to other reward programs

Full Review:
The Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ card starts off with a huge intro bonus and doesn't lose steam from there, offering a myriad of terrific benefits and perks and great point earning opportunity. When you combine this with the card's enormous point redemption possibilities you have a card frequent travelers are going to want in their pocket.

Our Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis found its sister card, Chase Sapphire Preferred, to have a winning $2.19 average hotel and flight redemption value (aka, "combined" value) for every $100 spent. Since both the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred have the same point value, Chase Sapphire Reserve also offers a $2.19 average hotel and flight value. The stand-alone hotel value was also at first place with a lofty $2.61 value for every $100 spent, much higher than the next ranked cards.

You'll earn 3 points for each dollar you spend on travel and dining out and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. Not to mention the 50,000 point bonus you'll get after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months (a $1,086 value!). This intro bonus is worth either $750 when you redeem for travel via Chase Ultimate Rewards or a spectacular $1,086 if you transfer the points over to the Hyatt Gold Passport frequent travel program using the free 1:1 point transfer feature discussed later on in this review.

Chase Sapphire Preferred features some major card perks, including a $300 annual travel credit. This credit can be used towards any type of travel, including flights and hotel stays. That's a really big travel credit that you'll get every year you have the card. Add this to the $100 fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✔ and the card offers some serious credits. Plus you have access to 900+ airport lounges worldwide via your complementary Priority Pass Select membership. Other card perks include worldwide travel assistance, travel accident insurance, lost luggage reimbursement and no fees on foreign transactions.

Chase Sapphire Reserve provides a ton of flexibility when its time to redeem your earned points. And given the nature of the point redemption process, your earned points have no blackout dates or travel restrictions which makes it much easier to plan a vacation. Your biggest point bang for the buck will typically be to redeem them for travel by using Chase's online travel portal. Your points are worth an extra 50% more when you redeem them for travel though Chase Ultimate rewards, which offers the ability to book airfare, hotels, car rentals and cruises. You can also redeem them for cash through an account statement credit or electronic deposit into an eligible checking or savings account (minimum redemption = 2,000 points). Other redemption options include gift cards and travel.

One of the best and most unique features of this card is that you can transfer your earned points for FREE at a 1:1 value to other popular travel rewards programs including those from United and Southwest as well as Hyatt and Marriott. This is a terrific feature that allows you to take advantage of the point value of other programs. In fact, per our Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis, if you move your points over to the Hyatt Gold Passport program they'll be worth a spectacular $2.61 for each $100 you spent!

With triple points earned on travel and dining purchases, Chase Sapphire Reserve is a strong choice for frequent travelers or those who like to dine out, but is still an excellent pick for everyone who wants to earn points that give you a lot of redemption choices (free 1:1 transfer to other programs!). There is a $450 annual fee, but the $300 annual travel credit helps to offset that expense. If you'd prefer a card with similar benefits but a lower annual fee of $95 (waived the first year), check out Chase Sapphire Preferred. Overall, if you like to travel and enjoy earning serious rewards from your travel and dining out, this card is a smart pick.
