Barclaycard Visa® with Apple rewards Review

Our Detailed Review of This Card

A credit card specifically for Apple purchases may seem like a good thing, but the Barclaycard Visa® with Apple Rewards card has a few tricks up its sleeve.

To start, you will earn 3X points for each $1 you spend at Apple, 2X points for each $1 you spend at restaurants and 1X point per $1 spent on everything else. And the card claims it offers "special financing" for Apple purchase in that you don't have to pay interest on qualifying purchases made at Apple if you pay them in full within the promotional period. You'll get 18-months interest-free on purchases over $999, 12-months for purchases of $499-$998 and 6-months for purchases less than $499.

This sounds like a good deal; however, if your Apple purchase balance is not paid in full by the end of the promotional period (or if you make a late payment), you will be charged deferred interest. That means interest will be charged to your account from the transaction date of the purchase at the current Purchase APR. So if you didn't pay your balance in full, they'll go back to the date you made the purchase(s) and charge you deferred interest from that date. Not such a great deal after all!

Plus, any new purchases — like restaurant meals — you make on the card will be immediately charged the full Purchase APR. The "special financing" deal isn't extended to non-Apple purchases, so unless you want to be hit with some substantial interest fees each month, you need to pay those purchases off in full.

Because of this, we don't recommend the Barclaycard Visa® with Apple Rewards card unless you're 100% sure you'll pay off your entire balance by the end of the 0% APR finance period. There are many better reward card options on the market that will earn you significant rewards and offer a 0% APR period without penalizing you so severely for not paying the entire balance off by the end of the interest-free time frame.
