Our Detailed Review of This Card

Apply for This Card

The Platinum Card® from American Express (a NextAdvisor advertiser) is a great charge card for consumers looking for strong travel benefits, no interest (because you pay your balance in full each month) and flexible spending limits.

To start, the card offers an intro bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after spending $5,000 on purchases with your new card in the first 3 months of ownership. That bonus can go as high as 100,000 if you prequalify! The points keep racking up with 5X points on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, 5X points on eligible hotels booked through American Express Travel and 1X point on all other purchases. These points never expire and can be redeemed for travel, entertainment, dining or merchandise (the minimum redemption is 5,000 points).

On top of generous rewards-point accumulation, the card also offers a variety of perks that are great for travelers: no foreign transaction fees, complimentary benefits worth an average total value of $550 with the Fine Hotels & Resorts program, up to $200 for Uber rides annually, a $200 airline fee credit (which covers fees like in-flight food and entertainment or checking bags) and a $100 statement credit every 4 years when you apply for Global Entry (or an $85 statement credit for TSA PreCheck).

Some of the travel benefits are difficult to give a clear dollar value, but you may find these perks priceless: access to unlimited free Wi-Fi at over a million hotspots around the world and free access to over 1,200 airport lounges across 130 countries. With so many options, you can travel confident that you'll be relaxing in style.

Shopping and entertainment benefits include a statement credit of up to $100 a year for purchases at Saks Fifth Avenue (enrollment required), free concierge service (no matter where you are) and special protections on your purchases. For example, you may receive a refund of up to $300 per item (up to $1,000 per calendar year) through Return Protection if you try to return a purchase made with your card within 90 days of your purchase and the merchant won't take it back.

The card has a high annual fee, $550, but if you travel a few times a year or take advantage of the many benefits, the card should quickly pay for itself. If that high annual fee is a dealbreaker for you, but you still want a charge card with great incentives, take a look at the American Express Gold Card, which also offers great rewards for a $250 annual fee.

Overall, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a strong choice for travelers in the market for a charge card who are looking for significant credits and perks.
