If you’ve been watching TV in the last couple of weeks, you’ve probably seen a commercial for the cool new Discover Freeze it feature. It lets current Discover cardholders quickly and temporarily “freeze” their card account using their computer or smartphone app, thereby preventing new purchases, cash advances and balance transfers. Once the card has been located it can just as easily be “unfrozen,” making it immediately available for use again.

Anyone who’s ever misplaced their credit card, left it at a restaurant or had a moment where they couldn’t remember the last place they put it can appreciate the convenience of being able to essentially turn their account off and on with a few clicks. Instead of the hassle of calling the credit card issuer, cancelling the card and having a new one sent to you in the mail, Discover users can just “freeze” the card. With Freeze it your account number will not change and new purchases will be prevented until you unfreeze the card. Even though new purchases cannot be made, you should continue to pay your bill and manage your account.

It’s important to note that while this is a great feature, if you think your card has been stolen, you should immediately call Discover and have it completely cancelled. Additionally, there are some transactions that will continue to be charged to your card, including bills that merchants mark as recurring, as well as returns, credits, dispute adjustments, payments, Discover protection product fees, other account fees, interest, rewards redemption and certain other exempted transactions.

Combining Discover Freeze it with Discover’s other great features like cash back or travel rewards, free FICO® Scores and no foreign transaction fees make Discover a card worth having in your wallet. Our independent reviews give high marks to the following Discover cards:

For Balance Transfers
We recommend Discover it Balance Transfer, which offers 5% cash back in categories that rotate quarterly, 1% cash back on everything else, an 18-month 0% intro APR on balance transfers (with a 3% balance transfer fee), a 6-month 0% intro APR on purchases and no annual fee. Cardholders will also get a free FICO Score on their statement every month.

For Cash Back
Discover it Cash Back cardholders will earn 5% cash back in categories that rotate on a quarterly basis and 1% cash back on everything else. They can also take advantage of a 14-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers, plus no foreign transaction fees and a free FICO Score monthly. There is also no annual fee.

For Travel
Take a look at Discover it Miles, which features 1.5 miles for every dollar spent, a 12-month 0% intro APR on purchases as well as no annual fee. Plus, as a one-time bonus at the end of the first year, Discover will double your miles. Just like the other Discover cards cardholders will get a free FICO Score each month and pay no foreign transaction fees.
