Citi Double Cash CardUpdated: June 12, 2018

The Citi Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer (a NextAdvisor advertiser) is Citi’s attempt to be a major player in the cash back credit card game. In recent years Citi has had great 0% Intro APR cards but has not been able to compete with some other major issuers when it came to the quality of their cash back product. So did they succeed? Is the Citi Double Cash Card 18 month BT offer a threat to the likes of Blue Cash Preferred from American Express, the Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Quicksilver Card – 0% Intro APR for 15 Months? In a word, yes.

What’s so special about the Citi Double Cash Card 18 month BT offer?

Citi Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer (let’s call it “Double Cash”) is a Mastercard that brings a unique value proposition to the consumer cash back card market. It effectively pays you 2% cash back on all your purchases (see below for details) with no limits, a base cash back rate that no other consumer card can match. We say “effectively” because Double Cash puts a new wrinkle in exactly how and when you earn that 2% back. The first 1% is when you make the purchase. The second 1%, though, is when you pay for the purchase. For those who pay their balance in full every month, this is a fairly minor delay. You’ll just have to wait about 30 days to get the second 1%. For those that carry a balance, you’ll have to wait longer. In general, people who are going to carry balances should be focused on getting the lowest APR they can, so rewards cards are typically not their best option anyway. Thus, for people who should be getting this card in the first place, Double Cash truly does give you double cash back. (Not to get too technical, but if you redeem your cash back in the form of a statement credit, that reduces the 1% cash back you can get from paying for your purchases by 1%, meaning your total cash back percentage is more like 1.99%).

Double Cash also adds a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months, rivaling the longest balance transfer intro APRs out there. There is a 3% balance transfer fee, but this is pretty a typical cost for transferring balances between cards. If you’re in the market for a balance transfer card that offers high cash back rewards, Double Cash is a very appealing choice.

Redemption is easy and flexible. Once you’ve accumulated $25 cash back, you can either request a check, use it as a statement credit or use it to purchase a gift card.

Double Cash also has no annual fee and no rotating categories, making it a great no-hassle card. The only thing it really lacks is a cash introductory bonus. While a bonus would certainly be nice, the generous cash back is going to more than make up for the lack of bonus over the long haul.

Should you apply for the Citi Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer?

There are a couple of things to consider before you apply. First, you should have excellent credit as Double Cash is targeted at the excellent credit market and you may not get approved without it. Second, you should consider your spending patterns. If your spending tilts heavily towards groceries or gas, one of our other top-ranked cash back cards, such as Blue Cash Preferred from American Express, might be a better fit. It offers 6% back at U.S. supermarket (up to $6k in spend per year), 3% on U.S. gas and at select U.S. department stores and 1% on everything else.  Third, Double Cash does not have an introductory bonus, so if you like to chase those, this card is not for you. But if you’re not worried about the bonus, you have more varied and probably typical spending patterns or you just don’t want to have to worry about cash back percentages or limits, the Citi Double Cash Card can’t be beat. The effective 2% cash back (see above discussion for detail) on everything beats out the Capital One Quicksilver Card – 0% Intro APR for 15 Months‘ 1.5% back (although that is all given on the purchase), in our opinion making Double Cash the new no-hassle, straightforward cash back card champion, at least for those who pay their balance in full every month.
