If you’re anything like us, you do a lot of your shopping year-round on Amazon.com, thanks to its fast shipping times and wide variety of goods, and its usefulness only increases in the last few months of the year. If you know you’re going to be spending plenty during the last 3 months of the year on Amazon.com, you’ll want the Discover it Cash Back card in your wallet. That’s because cardholders who activate and use their card from Oct. 1, 2018 through Dec. 31, 2018, will earn 5% cash back on Amazon.com purchases (up to the quarterly maximum, currently $1,500, then it’s 1% back). On top of that, Discover will match all of the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year as a cardholder. This means you’re earning an effective 10% back on Amazon.com purchases (up to the quarterly maximum) during the last quarter of the year! While these perks are stellar, Discover it Cash Back doesn’t stop there, as you can use your rewards to pay via Amazon.com and more! Keep reading to learn why we call Discover it Cash Back the best credit card for Amazon.com purchases this holiday season.

Why Discover it Cash Back is best for holiday shopping on Amazon.com

You’ll earn 5% cash back on your purchases

As noted above, starting Oct. 1 and lasting all the way through Dec. 31, cardholders who use their Discover it Cash Back card to shop on Amazon.com will earn a whopping 5% cash back on all their purchases. While there is a limit to how much you can earn in cash back at the 5% rate each quarter you activate ($75 back per quarter), there is no cap for earning the standard 1% cash back, and if you are a new Discover cardholder, every cent of cash back you earn during your first year counts toward the Cashback Match bonus. This bonus works a bit differently than what you might typically see when it comes to intro bonuses. It effectively enables you to earn twice as much cash back during the first year you’re a cardholder by taking everything you earn in those first 12 months and matching it. That means if you earn $400 in cash back your first year, Discover will give you another $400 at the end of the year for a total of $800 back — no spending minimums necessary! If you get started now, that means you’ll get your Cashback Match bonus just in time for next year’s holiday season.

In addition to earning 5% cash back at Amazon.com, purchases at wholesale clubs during this quarter (Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2018) will also earn 5% — though you’ll want to be mindful of the quarterly maximum when planning your holiday shopping. Note that you have to activate the cash back each quarter to earn the 5%, but Discover makes that easy with online reminders and alerts you can have sent to your email. The 5% cash back categories change every quarter, and in the past they have included things like gas, public transit, home improvement stores, groceries, restaurants and more. That will give you plenty to look forward to in the months to come.

Pay with your cash back at checkout

Cash back is calculated at the end of each billing period, so you will be able to redeem it in any amount pretty quickly once you get your card and start using it. If you connect your Discover card to your Amazon.com account, you can redeem your cash back while you’re shopping, which is a super convenient perk. It’s easy to see how much cash back rewards are available to you without having to log into your Discover account. Simply select Discover as your payment option in checkout, and you’ll be shown your available cash back. You can use all of it, part of it or save it for later — the choice is yours.

If you want to get a closer look at how much cash back you’ve made so far in a quarter or the whole year, you can see an in-depth breakdown on Discover’s website after you log into your account. This breakdown shows how much you’ve earned for the 5% category in a quarter, as well as how much you’ve earned at the standard 1% cash back rate. And if you’d rather redeem your cash back rewards another way, you’ve got plenty of methods to choose from: statement credit, direct deposit to your bank account, gift cards and merchandise and even charitable donations are all redemption methods available to Discover cardholders.

What else does Discover it Cash Back have to offer?

On top of its fantastic cash back rewards and first-year bonus, this card has a number of other great features that will give you good cheer throughout the year. First, you’ll get 14 months of 0% intro APR on purchases (then the go-to variable rate applies), which is a great perk to have around the holidays — as well as 14 months of 0% intro APR on balance transfers (then the go-to variable rate applies). Note that the card has a 3% balance transfer fee. Next, not only does it have no annual fee, but you won’t have to pay foreign transaction fees, making it a great card to take with you on business trips or vacations abroad. Additionally, if you miss a payment, your first late fee will be waived — what a relief! Speaking of payments, you can choose your own payment due date to align with your personal financial calendar. Finally, Discover provides a plethora of helpful perks to all of its cardholders, including social security alerts, a free FICO credit score printed on your monthly statements, Freeze it technology that lets you press pause on your card if it goes missing and hundreds of fun, colorful card designs to choose from.
