When it comes to travel rewards credit cards, it’s hard to know which one is right for you, especially when you’re looking at two cards with similar rewards. Two credit cards that offer similar base rewards with very different bonuses and special offers are the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. So which card is best for travelers? We’ve pitted these two top-rated travel credit cards to see which ones reigns supreme. Keep reading to determine which card is best for you.

Best ongoing rewards: Capital One Venture

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card takes the cake when it comes to ongoing rewards. That’s because from now through Jan. 31, 2020, cardholders will earn a whopping 10X miles on bookings made through Hotels.com/Venture. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card holders also earn an unlimited 2X miles on all other purchases. On the flip side, the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard earns an unlimited 2X miles on all purchases.

Best bonus opportunity: Barclays Arrival Premier

The Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard strikes back in the bonus opportunity with its annual bonus of 25,000 miles. Yes, you read that correctly — you have the opportunity to earn a 25,000 bonus every year you’re a cardholder. Here’s how it works: you’ll earn 15,000 miles when you spend $15,000 on purchases in a year, then an additional 10,000 miles after you spend an additional $10,000 on purchases in a year. On top of that, you’ll earn 2X miles on the $25,000, which adds another 50,000 miles. That totals to 75,000 miles (15,000 miles + 10,000 miles + 50,000 miles). While the annual opportunity to earn 75,000+ miles is impressive, as it’s equal to $750 in travel, the fact that cardholders get it every year they have the card really gives it the edge.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card’s bonus is also nothing to scoff at, as it has a traditional intro bonus opportunity of 50,000 miles — that’s worth $500 in travel — to cardholders who spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of card membership.

Highest redemption value: Capital One Venture

Both cards offer generous rewards, but do these rewards translate to high redemption values? For the most part, yes, but the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card sneaks ahead here with its combined flight and hotel redemption value of $2.40 per $100 spent, according to our Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis. In fact, the card’s high flight and hotel redemption value crowned it the victor of our Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis. Although the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard isn’t the No. 1 card in our analysis, it also holds a respectable flight and hotel redemption value of $2.00 per $100 spent.

Best redemption options: Tied

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard both provide cardholders with some versatile redemption options. Miles earned with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card can be redeemed for travel two ways. They can either contact Capital One Rewards Center to book travel with no blackout dates or travel restrictions, or use their card to book their upcoming travel, then redeem their miles for a statement credit to cover all or part of that purchase. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card holders can also redeem their miles for cash, gift cards or brand-name merchandise, but miles hold the most value when they’re used for travel.

The Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard offers just as much flexibility, as cardholders can redeem their miles for travel statement (allowing you to book travel however you’d like, then redeem your miles to cover all or part of your travel purchase), a cash statement credit, gift cards and merchandise. Cardholders can also transfer their miles to Barclays’ participating travel loyalty programs (note that the value of these points may vary, depending on the loyal program you select). Similar to the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard’s miles redeemed for travel offer the best value.

Cheapest annual fee: Capital One Venture

Annual fees and travel rewards credit cards usually go hand-in-hand, although there are a few exceptions. Both cards detailed in this post are not exceptions to this rule. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a $95 annual fee that’s waived for the first year, while the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard has a $0 for the first year (after that it’s $150/year). It’s easy to get sticker shock when you see the Barclays card’s annual fee, which starts on year 2, but it’s important to note that this is the only card we review which offers an annual bonus opportunity, meaning the annual fee may be worth it.

Lowest foreign transaction fees: Tied

It’s no surprise that the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard have no foreign transaction fees, as both are top-rated travel rewards credit cards. If you don’t know, foreign transaction fees usually cost 3% to 5% of each transaction made overseas, which can really add up. As such, it’s essential for world travelers to get a card with no foreign transaction fees.

Best added perks: Barclays Arrival Premier

When it comes to added perks, the Barclays Arrival Premier World Elite Mastercard blows the competition out of the water because it offers some high-end travel perks. That’s because this card offers a $100 automatic statement credit for the cost of 1 Global Entry application fee every 5 years and complimentary online FICO scores. Cardholders also get visit over 800 airport lounges worldwide — there’s a $27 per person fee, per visit, but this is reasonable considering the availability you have to these exclusive lounges — and access to the Barclays Travel Community, which connects you with other members and their travel stories.

On the other hand, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card comes with the Visa Signature benefits, which includes complimentary upgrades and special savings at hotels, resorts and spas when they pay with their card, access to 24/7 complimentary concierge service, auto rental collision damage waiver at no additional cost, shopping discounts at retailers and online merchants and more. It also offers a statement credit for the cost of 1 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application, which is a must-have for frequent flyers.
