3 more discover card perksUpdated: Sept. 14, 2018

When you apply for a new credit card, you’re probably focused mostly on the features and benefits that are specific to the card, like its intro APR or what kinds of rewards it earns. However, it can be equally worth your while to consider what kinds of perks are available to you as a cardholder within the financial institution that issues your credit card. One of the credit card issuers that is repeatedly lauded for its customer satisfaction is Discover. We’ve already detailed some of the incredible perks offered by Discover to all of its cardholders, such as access to exclusive shopping discounts and the ability to lock your card if it turns up missing with the Freeze it feature, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In this article, we’re highlighting three more Discover card perks that you might not know about and why they’re a big deal.

You can switch your rewards program

How it works: Discover offers some pretty amazing rewards, and choosing between earning cash back or travel miles can be a tough pick. Fortunately, if you go with one and decide down the road that you’d prefer the other, you don’t have to deal with the hassle of applying for a new credit card. Instead, you can request that your rewards program be transferred at no extra cost or penalty, and without the hassle of two separate cards or getting a new account number.

Why it’s a big deal: Savvy consumers can put this to work for them. For example, if you know that you have a trip coming up in the next year and there’s not much on the Discover it Cash Back card’s 5% cash back calendar that appeals to you, switch to the Discover it Miles travel rewards program and earn a flat 1.5 miles per $1 spent to put toward your travels. You can always switch again if you like the sound of future 5% cash back categories — Discover recently started publishing the entire year’s worth at once to let consumers plan out their spending.

What else you need to know: It’s important to note that not all Discover cards are eligible to be converted to a rewards program. Additionally, note that when you request the change, it will take until the start of the next billing cycle to be reflected. In the meantime, you’ll continue earning cash back or miles the same as you always have.

Make a difference with your cash back rewards

How it works: Starting at a penny, you can donate your earned cash back rewards to the charity of your choosing. There are currently 9 to select from, including the ASPCA and American Cancer Society, among others. As an added bonus, Discover will donate extra money to whichever charity receives the most card member donations!

Why it’s a big deal: We all want to give back more, but sometimes it’s hard to find the time and energy to donate to charity. That’s why Discover has simplified the process by allowing users to redeem their earned rewards in the form of a charitable donation. Plus, donating this way ensures that you are giving money to legitimate charities and prevents you from the risk of falling for a charity scam.

What else you need to know: The list of charitable organizations you can donate your earned rewards to isn’t huge, and if you have a Discover it Miles card, you aren’t eligible to donate this way. But fear not! The Discover Giving program allows you to make secure, easy donations to over 1.5 million charities through its partnership with the JustGive organization, paid with your credit card. Cash back bonus customers who want to go the extra mile can even turn around and take the cash back earned from JustGive donations and redeem them as a charitable donation for a feel-good double whammy.

Don’t like your card design? Change it!

How it works: Discover offers over 140 unique card designs, including a rainbow of colors (including an actual rainbow spectrum design), nature and animal themes, country flags, sports (including designs to represent all 32 of the National Hockey League teams) and much more. You might have trouble deciding when you apply for a card, but fortunately, Discover recognizes that it’s human nature to want to change up your look. That’s why it lets cardholders request a new card design whenever they want, whether their current card is worn or damaged, or they just need a change in wallet decor.

Why it’s a big deal: Although it might be a bit superficial, we all have changes in our tastes from time to time. Whether you didn’t realize just how many card designs there were when you applied (or you got your Discover card when there were only a handful of colors available), you can request a new one any time you want — no questions asked. So, if you were really digging lime green in 2017 but feel like 2018 is best represented with a beach theme on your credit card, you can get what your heart desires.

What else you need to know: Requesting a new card design does not change your account number, so be sure to properly destroy your old card once you have the new one in hand! Otherwise, you could expose yourself to credit card fraud, which is the opposite of an exciting experience.
