Citi ThankYou Premier Card Raises Bonus 50,000Earlier this year, the Citi ThankYou Premier Card (a NextAdvisor advertiser) sweetened its uncapped 3X travel rewards with a 30,000 point intro bonus. Now, Citi is boosting its intro bonus to an incredible 50,000 points — worth $625 when redeemed for travel through Citi’s ThankYou Travel Center — for cardholders who spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening, giving it one of the highest intro bonus offers of all the rewards cards we’ve reviewed! If you’re looking for a new credit card, this is the perfect time to check out the Citi ThankYou Premier Card, so read on as we dig into its features.

The Citi ThankYou Premier Card is made for consumers of all stripes, earning 3X points on travel-related purchases, such as flights, public transportation and lodging. It’s particularly great for those who like to hit the road in their own vehicles, as unlike many other travel cards, its travel category includes gas stations. It also earns 2X points on dining out and entertainment expenses, and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases. There is no limit for any of the point categories, the points never expire and you can redeem them for cash, gift cards, travel, purchases from and more. You can even transfer your points to airline loyalty programs such as TrueBlue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club for free.

Of course, you will also earn a 50,000-point intro bonus, which is equal to $500 in cash, if you spend $4,000 within the first 3 months of card ownership. However, redeeming your points through Citi’s ThankYou Travel Center increases the bonus’ value by 25%, giving you $625 that you can use to book travel with no blackout dates or airline restrictions. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll also enjoy no foreign transaction fees when using this card. The Citi ThankYou Premier Card has a $95 annual fee, though it’s waived for the first 12 months.

Are there any downsides?

While this card has a fantastic intro bonus and offers a higher earning potential than most other cards with flat rewards rates, if you’re frequently staying in hotels, there may be better cards out there for you. For instance, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card earns 10X miles for hotels when you book on, and its points ranked highest on our Travel Rewards Card Value Analysis. Additionally, it also has a high intro bonus of 50,000 miles — worth $500 in travel — and you only have to spend $3,000 to earn it instead of $4,000 (although you can’t redeem your points for 25% more like you can with Citi’s ThankYou Travel Center). Alternatively, if you want a travel rewards card that’s more suited to everyday purchases, you may want to consider a card that earns increased rewards on every purchase, such as the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard. It earns 2X miles on all purchases, and when you redeem your miles, you instantly get 5% of those miles back to use toward your next redemption.

Other downsides of the Citi ThankYou Premier Card include the excellent credit requirement, which means you probably need a credit score of 750 or higher to qualify for this card, and the $95 annual fee, which can diminish the card’s value if you aren’t taking good advantage of its rewards. Discover it Miles is a great option for consumers with average to excellent credit (usually considered a credit score of 670 or higher), as it has no annual fee and earns 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all purchases. As an unusual bonus, Discover will match all of the miles you earn at the end of your first year of card ownership, so if you earn 25,000 miles your first year, Discover will give you another 25,000 miles for a total of 50,000 miles back.
