How do I get 10% back at Amazon.com and Target?

Discover it – Cashback Match earns 5% cash back in rotating categories each quarter you activate (up to the quarterly maximum, currently $1,500, then it’s 1% back) and 1% on all other purchases. Since October through December’s categories are Amazon.com and Target, you’ll earn 5% on those purchases. Additionally, Discover will match all of the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year, which means you’re effectively earning 10% on your Amazon.com and Target purchases from October through the end of 2017. If you max out the quarterly cap on these purchases, currently $1,500, you’ll earn $75 back, and since it’s doubled at the end of your first year as a cardholder, you’ll earn a total of $150 back on those purchases. Plus, you’ll get 1% back on all other purchases that becomes an effective 2% back after Discover matches your cash back after your first year as a cardholder. On top of that, you get a 14-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (with a 4% balance transfer fee), which means you’ll get your first year’s cash back bonus before you have to pay any interest!

What are the downsides?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Discover it – Cashback Match is one well-rounded cash back credit card. That said, there are some minor things you may want to consider. First, although the card’s rotating categories are no big deal to some, others aren’t very excited by the fact that they must activate the 5% categories every month to earn rewards. If you’re someone who doesn’t want to deal with rotating categories and you’d prefer a card that earns a flat rate on everyday purchases, you may want to consider the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express (a NextAdvisor advertiser). This credit card earns 3% back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6.000/year in purchases, then it’s 1% back), 2% back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores and 1% on all other purchases. Cardholders who spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening will get a $150 cash back bonus! The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express has no annual fee and a 15-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (with a 3% or $5 balance transfer fee, whichever is greater). It should be noted that the Blue Cash Everyday Card has a higher-earning sister card, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, that earns 6% back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6.000/year in purchases, then it’s 1% back), 3% back at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores and 1% on all other purchases, and a $200 intro bonus opportunity for cardholders who spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. It has a 12-month 0%intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (with a 3% or $5 balance transfer fee, whichever is greater) and there’s an $95 annual fee.

The other aspect of Discover it – Cashback Match that cardholders may find unappealing is the fact that it’s not as widely accepted as some other credit cards — this is something one of our writers learned after she got a Discover card. While Discover claims its cards are accepted nationwide by at least 97% of the merchants who take credit cards, there may be an instance where you are unable to use your Discover card. As such, you may want to confirm that most of the places or sites you frequent take Discover before you apply for the card. That said, if you’re an avid Target or Amazon.com shopper, the card may still be worthwhile.
