Yola Review

Yola
Rating:
Bottom Line:
Sleek templates; decent editing tools; outstanding customer service and 30-day money back guarantee; mobile optimization only available on select plans

Full Review:
Yola is one of the few website builders that offers a free plan as well as a money back guarantee on the paid plans if you are dissatisfied. Its claim to be "committed to efficient, speedy customer support" holds true, though we wish the mobile optimization and all of the templates were available on all plan types.

Plans and Pricing

Yola offers four different plan types for you to choose from, all of which feature password-protected pages as well as availability in different languages. Its free plan gives you three pages, 1 GB of storage, 1 GB bandwidth and a semi-custom domain name, as it will include Yola in its name (e.g. yoursite.yola.com). All of its paid plans allow unlimited pages, unlimited bandwidth, a free custom domain for one year and a 30-day money back guarantee.

Basic Plan
The Basic plan costs $4.17/month when you commit for one year or $5.95/month if you choose to pay monthly. It includes all of the standard features with the paid plans, Yola advertisements that display at the bottom of your pages and 2 GB of storage.

Professional Plan
The Professional plan contains no Yola ads and includes all of the paid plan features mentioned above, as well as a few extras. The Professional plan costs $8.33/month when you pay for the year or $12.95/month on a month-to-month basis and features 5 GB of storage, premium style templates, advanced editing, mobile optimization and the ability to publish your website to Facebook. If you want to use e-commerce on your website, you can add an online store to your site for an additional $10/month.

Unlimited Plan
The Unlimited plan includes everything the Professional plan does and allots for unlimited storage, full-site search optimization scans, automatic SEO monitoring, keyword usage and traffic reporting. This is the only plan that includes an analytics tool, which you can either connect to a pre-existing account with Google Analytics, or add a custom tracking code to monitor your visitors. This plan costs $16.66/month with a one-year commitment, or $24.95/month on a monthly payment plan. Similar to the Professional plan, you also have the option to add an online store to your site for an additional $10/month.

Getting Started

Signing up is easy and quick with Yola. Simply enter your name, email address and password and you will instantly receive a welcome email with your new account information as well as links to free training videos and tutorials. Next, you can select your template and domain name to begin customizing your website.

Creating Your Website

The number of templates you have to choose from depends on the type of plan you signed up for. Only the Professional and Unlimited plans give you premium-style templates, however, the templates offered for the Basic and free plans feature sleek, modern designs as well. You can view a live preview of each template before making your selection, as well as each template's details, which includes a short description. We really liked this feature because it gave more information as to what type of business that specific template is ideal for; you also have the option to start with a blank template if you prefer. After you make your template selection, you are prompted to enter your website name and select a category. The drop-down list of categories includes things such as artist/photography, building and construction, clothing and fashion, education, music, home decor and personal. You are also prompted to enter your contact information, like business address and phone number, which will be added to the contact page of your website. You can skip this step if you wish and fill in the information later.

Editing Your Website

The Yola Sitebuilder is easy to navigate and features drag-and-drop widget tools to add, edit and delete things on your website. When adding text, you have the option to change colors, font and sizing. There are two ways to add a single picture or a picture gallery to your website. You can choose to either upload files from your computer or connect your Flickr account. These same options are available when editing your background image as well. Unfortunately, unlike some other website builders, Yola does not feature any default images or stock photos for you to choose from.

You can also alter the styling and layout of your website with tools that allow you to add column dividers, lines, buttons and panels. If you wish to add music or a video to your website, you can upload MP3 files or embed an external link to a YouTube video. Google Maps is already synced to Yola, so after you enter a physical address, a visual map will automatically be created for you to add to your Contact page. As with most website builders, you have the option to add, edit and reorder pages on your website with Yola.

Other Features

There are a few additional features that all plan holders can utilize and some, such as traffic and analytics, are only available to select plan holders.

Forms
The form builder is a really nice feature. You can select the standard Contact Us form, which automatically generates fields for name, email address, phone number and message, or choose the Blank Form to add any number of fields you wish, including drop-down menus, multiple choice, checkboxes and blank fields. The forms you create also automatically include a CAPTCHA, which helps prevent spammers from emailing you.

Commerce
You can add an online store to Yola's Professional and Unlimited plans for an additional fee of $10/month. This feature allows you to sell and manage your inventory for up to 1,000 products. You can also accept credit card payments, track your orders and create coupons and discounts. Additionally, unlike other services, Yola will not charge you or your customers any transaction fees.

Social Media
There are a few different social media widgets you can add for Facebook, Twitter and Google+. The Facebook "Like" widget allows visitors to "Like" your official Facebook page, and will also post a story in their friends' News Feed with a link back to your website or your Facebook page. The Facebook Comments widget allows visitors to have a conversation with other visitors directly on your site. The Tweet widget will give visitors an easy way to share content from your website directly to their Twitter feed. While there is no Google+ sharing widget, you do have the option to add the standard "like" and "follow" toolbar for Facebook, Twitter and Google+ that will display on your website in one single toolbar.

Language
No matter what plan type you have, Yola allows you to choose a different language for your website to be translated to, which is an exclusive feature that many website builders don't offer. Some of the current languages it supports are English, Spanish, German, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Czech and Dutch.

Customer Support

In addition to its video tutorials and fairly detailed forums and FAQ page, Yola offers support via email and live chat. It should be noted that live chat is only available to those on one of the premium plans — the Basic, Professional or Unlimited plan — and can be reached Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. MT. The live chat representative was pleasant and knowledgeable when addressing our questions and concerns. When we contacted customer support via email, we were pleasantly surprised that we received a response in under an hour. The representative was extremely friendly and informative, and thoroughly answered all of our questions.

Conclusion

We were not disappointed in the theme selection and editing tools Yola offers. The free plan is a great option for someone who doesn't need to build a very big website, however, we wished that the analytics and mobile optimization were available on all its plans and not only the Professional and Unlimited plans. The customer service is outstanding and with the 30-day money back guarantee, it's worth checking out. While Yola isn't the best of the best, it's still a solid option for creating and building your website.
