Web Hosting Report Card

This chart breaks down our review criteria into a virtual report card of observations and performance metrics that we looked at in our web hosting reviews. You'll find qualitative evaluations of essential components, as well as quantitative data on a host's uptime, average response time, and bandwidth. Uptime and response time are measured by a third-party testing company that tries to reach each web host every 5 minutes, from different locations around the world, 24 hours a day. The average uptime measures the percentage of time our test sites were reachable on each web host. The average for all web hosts we reviewed was 99.85% during the 28-month test period. Response time indicates the overall speediness of a web host's servers; a lower number indicates better performance and can be compared to the group average of .542 seconds. When we signed up for each web host, we measured robust data transfer speeds with our 77MB Quicktime movie test, averaging the file download times over three tries; again, a lower number signals better performance (the group average was 1 minute 47 seconds).
