Bottom Line:
Very basic web host at a reasonable price, but questionable uptime, lacks features and options for intermediate and advanced users.

Myhosting.com has been in the web hosting business since 1997, a comparatively long time. They offer simple and stable web hosting with a suite of great tools for one low price. While the web hosting package we reviewed may not have enough features for advanced users, the price and site builder make it a reasonable choice for those just starting out.

Pricing

Their basic hosting plan runs at $6.45 per month, but an exclusive 25% Myhosting.com discount for NextAdvisor readers brings the monthly price down to $3.95. While many web hosts require a multi-year contract for such a low price, Myhosting.com only requires a year commitment. You get one year of free domain name registration, 30-day money back guarantee, unlimited space, and ten email addresses. Although ten addresses is significantly fewer than many hosts offer, the email is powered by Microsoft Exchange, giving you a number of powerful enterprise-level features that may make Myhosting.com attractive for some users. Domain privacy is also free, although you must enable it in your control panel.

Basic Features

Myhosting.com uses a custom-built control panel, so if you're familiar with web hosts that just stick cPanel and Fantastico under the hood, you'll find something different with Myhosting.com. While that can sometimes be confusing for those who are used to the organization of standard interfaces, Myhosting's interface is fairly easy to navigate and use. Aside from a couple of things we had to look up in their support documentation, we quickly found all the features we weer looking for.

The sitebuilder is the Parallels Plesk Site Builder, one of our favorite web-based site design applications. It's fully featured and lets you create a nice looking site complete with blogs, maps, guestbooks, and more. If you prefer to build your own site using plug-ins, that's also possible with Myhosting, though we've found they have fewer tools available than many of our top-rated hosts. Choices include WordPress for blogging; Drupal and Joomla for content management; CubeCart, Zen Cart, and Magento for e-commerce; and Coppermine or Gallery for hosting photos. These are solid tools, but they're also just a few of an enormous library of options you would have access to with a host using a more standard interface.

Advanced Features

Myhosting offers users up to three MySQL databases, which may be a bit of a limitation for advanced users or those who want to create more feature-intensive websites, since each advanced feature will probably require its own database. The service also only supports PHP and Perl, which may be another limitation for advanced users. However, you can enable shell access by request for more complex commands.

Usability

Myhosting's control panel is quite different from the more standard options like vDeck and cPanel, and in many ways very stripped down. It was not immediately obvious how to get to the sitebuilder, but the host's help section did guide us there fairly quickly. While we like the tools Myhosting offers, their selection is significantly smaller than many other hosts we've reviewed, which may be a problem if you don't like the selection they offer. That said, the support documentation is thorough and easy to understand, which made navigating the interface pretty simple.

Performance

We've been tracking Myhosting.com's uptime and server response time for more than a year, and so far the reliability has not been great. Here are the current stats:

Myhosting.com test data:
My Hosting Group Avg. Group Best Group Worst
27-Mo. Uptime Score 99.30% 99.84% 99.98% 99.30%
27-Mo. Avg. Response Time: 0.519s 0.618s 0.151s 0.1463s

Support

Myhosting.com offers 24/7 phone-based customer support based in Toronto, Canada. Our test call was picked up immediately, and an answer to our question was given without fuss. The online support wiki is also very helpful. As we mentioned above, there's a 30-day money-back guarantee. After that, there's no pro-rated refund.

Conclusion

Myhosting.com offers a decent web hosting service for just under $50.00 per year. It's a pretty good deal considering your domain privacy is free. However, Myhosting has the worst uptime percentage of any host we've reviewed and offers only a small selection of site tools. The service also lacks a number of important advanced features, making it a less-desirable choice for intermediate and advanced users, or even beginners who want to build feature-rich sites.
