Arvixe caught our attention because of its polished site builder, relatively cheap price and zero setup costs. $5.00 per month gets you web hosting for a year. With a two-year commitment that price goes down to $4.00 per month. Domain registration is free as long as you host with them, as is domain privacy (a feature that we strongly recommend and always appreciate seeing as a free option).
Arvixe gives you the industry-standard cPanel for interfacing with your site, along with the standard set of Fantastico scripts. This will let you install the popular Wordpress blogging program as well as a host of other add-ons. There are three ecommerce options: CubeCart, OS Commerce, and Zen Cart. These are heavy-duty shopping cart options, and not for the individual looking to sell a few items. We would have liked to have seen a better option for small-scale merchants. Creating a site with the included RVSiteBuilder is a more beginner-friendly process. It's a fantastic WYSIWYG site creation tool with a wide range of page types and a number of good-looking templates. There's a slight learning curve, but it's worth it. You can even create flash-based pages if you want to give your site a more polished web-2.0 look. Arvixe has not exhibited the fastest response time in our tests, in fact at .628 seconds, it was slower than our .500 second group average. Its uptime came in at 99.60%, versus the group average of 99.88% (showing a downtime of 8 hours 48 minutes for three months). The 1 minute 30 second download of our 78MB test file was a bit better than average (1 minute 47 seconds), but is far from a champ. Arvixe was not a terrible performer, but the low price does come at a bit of a sacrifice. Arvixe gives you a generous 60-day trial period. If you're unhappy with their service, you can get your hosting fees back (minus a $7.95 charge for the domain). There is no prorated refund after 60 days, so you'll need to make a decision before the guarantee period ends. Arvixe provides US-based support via chat, email and an 800-number. We found the hold time to be short. Even though we had to leave a message for a call-back, our call was returned within ten minutes. The call was somewhat noisy, but friendly and helpful. Chat support was also ably provided. All-in-all we think Arvixe will appeal to beginners and more experienced website owners alike. Their site builder is full-featured, domain privacy is free, the data transfer is solid, and the price is right. |

The death of a web host; the Internet says goodbye to GeoCities
In the relatively short history of the web, GeoCities is a bit of a marker. The service has been providing beginning web publishers with free web hosting since 1994. That is, up until yesterday when Yahoo! finally shuttered the site. Things on the web have changed in the last fifteen years, and the ad-supported service [...]
