1-VoIP offers three different plans to choose from depending on what your calling needs are. All plans require no long-term commitment, meaning you pay month-to-month and can cancel anytime.
The plans are fairly simple and differ primarily in price and the amount and type of outbound minutes you get per month. The Value plan costs $8.97/month and provides 500 minutes of outbound calling to North America, which includes the U.S. and Canada. The U.S. and Canada Unlimited plan costs $17.97/month and provides unlimited outbound calling to North America. Finally, the Premier Global plan costs $23.97/month and provides unlimited calls to more than 30 different countries, including Mexico, Australia, China, India and the U.K. You can view a full list of every country the service offers below.
1-VoIP offers customers free activation and shipping, which is a great plus. Like most VoIP services, there are small access and E911 surcharge fees, which allow you to call 9-1-1 from your VoIP phone.
The equipment required for 1-VoIP is standard for any VoIP service. You will need to supply a touch-tone corded or cordless phone and a broadband Internet connection, which can include cable modem, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), T-1, Fractional T-1 or T-3 Internet. When you sign up, 1-VoIP offers three options when it comes to the adapter that connects to your modem and phone. You can choose to have them mail you a free adapter that you will return upon cancellation of your service, purchase a combination adapter/router to get Wi-Fi and VoIP together for $89.00 or use your own equipment with the "bring your own device" option. Once you have all the required equipment, you connect your modem to the adapter and the adapter to your phone (or connect your phone to the adapter/router if you choose to go that route), then you're ready to start using your phone.
All of 1-VoIP's plans include a wide array of features. You're provided with calling features galore, including the ability to whitelist/blacklist numbers, digital call forwarding, anonymous call reject, call waiting, speed dial and more. Unlike other VoIP services, 1-VoIP provides you with virtual fax that lets you send and receive faxes. You'll receive faxes as email attachments and will be able to contact any fax numbers from the online member interface.
Porting your current phone number to VoIP is quick and easy. Need more than one number? 1-VoIP provides up to 2 free virtual phone numbers in the U.S. or Canada per account (in addition to your standard number). It also has some handy features for managing virtual numbers, including DNIS which lets you know what number a caller used to reach you and configurable caller ID that can display a virtual number on outgoing calls to prevent people you call from knowing your home number.
Checking your voicemail can be done from virtually anywhere — your phone, the online member center, your email where a recording of each voicemail will be sent and a remote access number that you can call from any phone.
1-VoIP has recently integrated its system with a service called Nomorobo, which blocks telemarketing and robotic calls. This feature can be activated through the member panel when you are logged into your 1-VoIP account. A variety of other features are included, such as custom announcements and hold music, that aren't too practical for most residential VoIP users. That being said, they are still fun features to have and may be useful to anyone running a small business from their home.
Should you have a question or problems with your account, customer service and technical support can both be reached via email and telephone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The service also has an email form box on its website's support page so you can ask a question without having to open up your email client, which is a nice touch. We found both forms of support to be fast, reliable and friendly. When we sent an email through the website, it was answered within minutes. On top of the quick-response emails, we found the customer representative on the phone to be pleasant, informative and — best of all — they picked up on the second ring without any menus to go through or hold music to listen to.
If you're unsatisfied with your service, 1-VoIP allows you to cancel your account at any time without incurring any cancellation fees. Since the service is month-to-month, you don't have to make a long-term financial commitment. When you cancel, you will simply be required to return any equipment 1-VoIP has sent to you.
International calling is not 1-VoIP's strongest suit. It only allows calls to more than 30 countries outside the U.S. and Canada with their Premier Global plan, which is limited compared to other services such as VOIPo or Vonage. Still, if the country you need to call is on the list, then unlimited outgoing calls for under $30/month is a pretty good deal. The service also has a search feature on its website where you can look up the exchange rate for any country throughout the world.
Below is the full alphabetical list of countries included in 1-VoIP's international plan. The * indicates that calls to mobile phones are also included.
Argentina - Buenos Aires
Brazil - Rio De Janiero
Brazil - Sao Paolo
Hungary - Budapest
Mexico - Mexico City
Mexico - Monterey
Mexico - Guadalajara
Russia - Moscow
Russia - St. Petersburg
U.S. Virgin Islands*
Venezuela - Caracas
Overall, 1-VoIP offers excellent customer service and reliable VoIP service with a plethora of convenient features. Their plans are affordable, and month-to-month service without a contract means you can conveniently cancel whenever you want. It's a pity the service only supports international calling to 30 countries, but you can't beat unlimited outgoing calls for less than $30/month if the country you want to reach is on that list.
