Bottom Line:
Lodging options only available for booking; helpful and clear-cut approach to online hotel reservations

Full Review:
For those who are only in need of a place to stay, Booking.com's prices can't be beat. It provides a thorough analysis of available rooming options for travelers in destinations around the world.

Getting Started

Booking.com gets down to business on its home page and asks users if they have a specific destination or hotel in mind that they'd like to travel to. It'll ask users to enter their check-in and check-out dates as well the number of guests they'll need hosted and if your trip will be for business or leisure.

Booking.com provides users with savings right off the bat, as it asks them to subscribe to its email notifications in order to receive a 10% discount automatically.

For travelers who are unsure of where they'd like to visit, the home page has a tab labeled "Explore Destinations" that will guide users to an external link where they can browse by adding countries, regions, continents or specific travel interests in order to best recommend a trip option for them.

Business travelers looking for a place to stay might benefit in searching through Booking.com, as it has specific tools to help a company stay organized in its reservation plans. The site offers properties in 212 countries as well as corresponding support lines in the native language so that incomers can communicate effectively with those who are a part of their itinerary. Booking.com for Business will compile spending reports by department, team or individual. It also provides a list of all of your hotel reservations in one place and a contact list that links through your company's business travelers. Creating a company account is easy, free and only takes a few minutes to sign up.

Price Competitiveness and Packages

Booking.com is one of few sites that focuses specifically on hotels, apartments and villas for vacationers, which means we weren't able to compare flight or rental car prices. In comparison to other sites that are residentially biased, Booking.com has relatively low prices, but are usually less flexible than users might find in other places. While this was easy to compare for domestic trips, it was rather challenging for international, as not all travel sites allow you to book with the same hotels. As such, we weren't able to successfully compare the pricing for international hotels.

Booking six months in advance

The Holiday Inn that we booked in New York six months ahead of time introduced a very low nightly cost of $131. This was actually the lowest price for this hotel that we found across the board of travel sites when it came to booking so far in advance.

Booking six weeks in advance

Booking the same hotel six weeks in advance also produced a surprisingly low nightly cost of $117. Generally, booking six weeks ahead of time will only generate high prices on hotels because that is the most common time to book a place to stay. We were extremely happy with the prices Booking.com offered us.

Booking last minute

We found the lowest price for the hotel we booked in New York on Booking.com when we tested the rates for a last-minute reservation at the Holiday Inn. For our purposes, we defined "last-minute" as one week before the day of departure. At just $107, Booking.com wowed us with this incredibly low rate.

Search Filters and Other Features

Booking.com does a great job of catering to the specific likes and dislikes of each individual traveler. For instance, there are options to filter hotel recommendations according to what you're interested in, including sightseeing, shopping, food, museums, gambling, entertainment, nightlife, historical monuments, beaches and even architecture.

Having such an extensive list of filters makes it easy and fun for users to decipher what exactly they're looking for in their trip or vacation and which hotel will be able to best address their needs. Users can sort search results by Booking.com's recommendations, the lowest price, star ratings, distance from downtown, reviewers score and have a ton of filter options like price, star rating, deal, cancellation policy, payment conditions, beach access, meal plans, property type, bed preferences, review score, facility and more.

Booking.com knows that comparing hotels can be a tedious and somewhat overwhelming process. In order to avoid the confusion of creating multiple hypothetical itineraries to compare hotels, the company will let users create a list of saved properties under a tab it call My Lists. Here, travelers can tag and save hotels, apartments and villas and come back to them all at once to make a price comparison specific to their findings.

Booking Process

Booking a hotel through Booking.com is pretty simple. Users will enter their intended destination and browse through lodging options using the filer and sort features, as detailed above. Once they've selected the hotel they prefer, Booking.com will open another tab in their browser where they can complete and confirm their reservation.

Rewards Program

Booking.com doesn't have a specific reward program, but it does offer great values to its loyal customers. Those who sign up for a business account or its email list will receive updates on price reductions and special deals only for members.

Customer Service

The customer service aspect of Booking.com is what impressed us the most. As a company, Booking.com seems to have a strong grasp on what it takes to ensure that its users are satisfied with the booking experience from start to finish, and it understands that this usually means that there are questions that need to be answered. The help section is located at the bottom of the page under Contact Us. Here, users will find links that will bring them to its Help Center and Booking pages, among others.

Almost all customer service requests are completed through the Help Center. This page made it simple for visitors to change a booking or make a special request. All it asks is that they enter their booking number and pin code to look up the reservation that needs to be edited. Here, users can change the dates of their trip, edit guest details, contact their specific property, request meals, change payment information, upgrade a room or even cancel a booking. We found it incredibly convenient that all of these options were available in the same place. Travelers with questions can contact Booking.com via email or telephone. It's phone lines are open 24/7 and recommended for urgent questions. For general questions, the site recommends sending an email. We received an email response within 24 hours.

Also in the support section of Booking.com were FAQs, which answered most, if not all of our general questions. The site also provided both a phone number and message board where users could reach out to a representative. Our note was answered in about 15 minutes and our call was answered immediately. It's also worth noting that the company has representatives from regions and countries all over the world, so international travelers have the chance to have their questions answered easily and in a timely fashion.

Conclusion

While Booking.com doesn't offer flights or car services, which makes it not ideal for someone who's looking for a one-stop shop, its hotel prices are hard to beat and the quality of its customer service really puts its booking experience over the edge. If organization and precision are high on your list of travel priorities, Booking.com might be the best place to find your temporary home.
