| Good price for check with nationwide criminal search, but it missed many things in our tests | |

Introduction:
Sometimes a company's name is more accurate than it intends to be. PeopleFinders is a people search/background check service that manages to get some things right, but like other services often errs on finding too many people for a single name. Price and Features: Need just a little bit of information to track down a long-lost friend, or to verify an address? Their basic people search product is only $1.95 and provides you with a phone number, address, full name and A.K.A.s, date of birth and known relatives. A real background check will cost you more; at $49.95 for the Comprehensive Background Report, PeopleFinders is in the upper price range of the services we looked at. It does, however include a nationwide background check, making it a bit more of a bargain. Also included are the standard bankruptcy, marriage, tax lien, property, and address checks. One interesting category not covered by other services is a search for DEA registrations, so you can find out if your subject ever had a license to prescribe or manufacture controlled substances. If you sign up for a PeopleFinders Membership Trial, you get a discount and will only pay $0.95 for a People Search Report and $39.95 for a Background Report. The service also offers a Monthly Membership including unlimited people search reports, email lookups, and social profile searches for $14.95 the first month and $24.95 per month after that. The monthly plan does not include background reports, business reports, criminal reports, or reverse phone lookups. Our Test: We found two brave volunteers to run our tests on, and then asked them to verify the information. One had a very uncommon name, the other a more common name. There was a good deal of inaccuracy in the reports, including incorrect marriage and bankruptcy information (one was a false positive, the other a false negative). It also returned fewer former addresses for both of our test subjects, and very little property information. It also missed out on one subject's criminal history (something only reported by Intelius and NetDetective). Having said all that, we did find the PeopleFinders reports to be among the easiest to read. Other Features: PeopleFinders offers additional and a la carte services including reverse phone, reverse address, social profile and business ownership searches. Conclusion: The key concept with all these services is that your mileage may vary. However, based on our samples we found that PeopleFinders was less accurate, and returned less information. As we mentioned, DEA Registrations are novel, and it's nice to get nationwide criminal searches, but for our searches they came up unexpectedly empty.
