Bottom Line:
Fairly comprehensive, includes federal and state criminal searches, though the latter is limited to certain jurisdictions
Full Review:
Introduction:

IntegraScan is a lesser-known people search/background check service, but they're a strong contender in the space. They make a strong play for their ability to suss out criminal records, in fact their site is filled with images of mug shots and handcuffs. Are they the America's Most Wanted of the online people search and background check space?

Price and Features:

The base price for the complete background search is $49.95. That includes a national criminal record search and national federal criminal record search. It also returns the first three digits of your subject's social security number (something easily determined by using someone's hometown). Additionally you'll get reports on bankruptcies, previous addresses, evictions, DEA registrations, professional licenses, fictitious business names and possible aliases.

Simply enter the first and last name, as well as the state of residency (former or current) of the individual you want to look up. You'll be given a list of matching names, which you can further refine by filtering on age range or the first three digits of the individual's Social Security number. Find the one that most closely matches (a list of addresses are shown along with age and those first three numbers of the SSN) and you're ready to go. Enter payment information and your results are sent to you within a few minutes. Like all background check searches, they offer you a number of additional options you can tack on to your order.

Our Tests:

As with every service we reviewed, we used the names of two volunteers and asked them to verify their information. One had a common name, the other a rather unique one. Unfortunately, IntegraScan's biggest weakness is probably its criminal records search. It also returned a few too many bankruptcies for our subject with a common name. IntegraScan managed to find a bankruptcy association for one of our subjects that no other service found.

The reports are easy to read, and when the service relies on the first three digits of the social security number, they're pretty useful. The main weakness is actually in its state criminal checks. It only seems to check certain county jurisdictions, so one of our subjects showed a clean record, where an arrest should have been shown. Given how much they emphasize criminal checks, this comes as a big disappointment, especially since the far cheaper Net Detective was able to turn up this piece of info. Which isn't to say it's a bad service for other types of information, but at least in our case the emphasis seems misplaced.

Extra Features:

IntegraScan doesn't really offer many extra features beyond bulk pricing for multiple lookups. About the only thing they offer in addition is a phone search for $4.95.

Conclusion:

IntegraScan did miss an arrest record for one of our subjects, but then so did most of the services we reviewed. On the other hand, it did get a number of things right, and there was comparably little noise in our reports. The inclusion of the first three digits of the SSN is a particularly nice touch for those reviewing job applicants. We think it complements the offerings of Intelius pretty well, and would recommend them as a one-two-punch combo for most background check needs.
