Bottom Line:
Standard service with a few cool extras including a Maximum Refund Guarantee
Full Review:
Is CompleteTax the best tax preparation service out there? No. But it does its best to compete with the big names. CompleteTax costs less than the more well-known tax prep services, and offers many of the same features, including a Maximum Refund Guarantee. If another do-it-yourself online tax service gets you a bigger refund, CompleteTax will give you back any fees you paid to file through them. Although their interface isn't as flashy or intuitive as the top services, it still gets the job done.

Pricing

Like most other tax preparation services, CompleteTax will allow you to e-file your federal return for free (CompleteTax Basic) if you are filing a 1040EZ. They also have Deluxe ($25.46) and Premium ($33.96) options for more complicated tax returns, but their prices are a little bit cheaper than the bigger tax prep services. Want to include your state taxes? That will cost $25.46, which is also cheaper than both H&R Block and TurboTax.

Interface

CompleteTax offers you a personalized tax prep experience. They ask you a few basic questions up front to customize your experience, which cuts down on the annoying string of unrelated questions later. For example, they will ask you if you made any real estate transactions during the year, and if you click no, they will cut out all of those deduction-related questions later.

Most of the initial questions that CompleteTax asks are easy Yes/No questions. Each Yes answer adds another section to the interface for you to complete. For example, if you answer Yes to whether you have a W-2 form, it will add a tab that allows you to enter that information. Same for Child Care, Unemployment Income, and so on. If you answer Yes for any section that isn't covered by CompleteTax Basic, it will prompt you to upgrade.

This makes the CompleteTax interface fairly simple and easy to navigate, unless you have a lot of complicated tax add-ons.

Support

CompleteTax has a comprehensive Customer Support page that has a slew of frequently asked questions and answers. If your question doesn't appear in the Customer Support section, you can email the Customer Support team with both technical and tax questions. Want to talk to a live person? For $19.95, you can get 1-on-1 tax support from a tax expert for up to 90 days.

Conclusion

While not as flashy or popular as H&R Block and TurboTax, CompleteTax offers a lot of the same great features with a more customizable tax prep experience. Along with their Maximum Refund Guarantee, it's definitely a tax prep service worth exploring.
