He Said/She Said Ratings

We took two volunteers, a man and a woman, and had them sign up for each service, fill out a profile, look at their matches, and then give us their impressions. We also asked them to rate each of our reviewed online dating sites.

He said:
"The ease of using OkCupid is what I liked most about it. I set up my profile in just a few minutes and I was impressed with the people that the site matched me with. Many of them had similar interests and it was nice to be able to narrow down the field by answering a few questions based on our likes and dislikes.

I did get a spam message within five minutes of signing up, but that's a minor complaint, and I was satisfied with using it on my phone, as well. It seems best suited for casual relationship seekers, but it's worth checking out regardless of any preference you might have."

She said:
"I really appreciate the high level of personalization that OkCupid allows. Although the options can be dizzying and maybe even a little intimidating, OkCupid guides you through the process pretty well. I think you get what you put into the site. The site also lets you add way more photos than a lot of other dating sites — you can have albums of pictures and connect your Instagram. That could get a little creepy, but it's still a neat feature if you want to give potential dates a peek into your real life.

Overall, OkCupid feels like a safe place to date online. I could control who could send me messages, create filters to block people who were low matches and got to see a lot of information about a person through the quiz questions we had both answered. If I were looking for a date, I would probably have a lot of fun using this website."

Online daters know the routine — upload your photo, update your age and appearance settings, write a short blurb about who you are and hope for the best. OkCupid adopts the same simple process when you sign up for its service. The registration is simple and doesn't ask for any kind of payment information. OkCupid offers an astounding number of fun and functional features available for users to create the most enjoyable atmosphere for themselves and their matches. The service's creators firmly believe that the reason behind the success of their site is better technology and a solid understanding of the math and psychology that needs to be applied in order to make the best matches.

OkCupid offers a number of browsing options, but the advanced search dropdown menu was what really impressed us. The filters were extremely specific, unlike anything we'd seen on other dating sites. Daters can choose to view matches based on things like their beliefs on drinking and drugs, offspring, whether or not they have pets, spoken languages, diet preferences and, even, astrological signs.

One of the features we found most helpful and unique was the Moderation section. This feature is offered when you flag another user's photo and allows you to see photos that have been flagged as inappropriate within the site. You and other users can decide whether the photo actually needs to be removed, using provided guidelines for what is and is not acceptable. We thought that Moderation gave a bit more control to the users of the site and made us feel like we were interacting with one another to keep OkCupid safe and fun.

Quizzes
These make up a considerable portion of OkCupid, but it's not all automated, stale questions. One of the unique features of this service is that it allows users to create their own quiz questions so that they can really focus in on what's important to them in a partner.

Visitors
Don't let the name mislead you — this feature is great. Visitors allows users to see who has viewed their profile recently.

Profile Creation

OkCupid is completely free to use and the signup process only takes about 30 seconds. The more advanced version of OkCupid is called A-List, which comes with a plethora of unusual features. A-List members will enjoy more advanced search options, can get rid of pesky ads, browse profiles invisibly, see the full list of who has liked their profile and store up to 5,000 messages. Subscriptions are monthly, with options for six-month ($3.95/month), three-month ($6.95/month) and one-month ($7.95/month) payment options.

Matching

After entering our profile settings, we were taken to a page that hosted a number of fun personality quizzes. There were simple and comical questions to answer, such as "Are you a morning person?" and "Can you handle scary movies?" The purpose of these questions is to make users feel comfortable and to allow them to divulge seemingly minor details about their personality. The answers to these questions are stored and compared to potential matches in the future.

The search begins as soon as you're ready, and OkCupid lines up a few potential matches right on your home screen. The profile previews read almost like a baseball card, as if you're reading that person's dating stats. Each clip showcases the person's name, age, location, photo and the "match" or "enemy" ratings that are calculated from comparing both of your information.

Once you've found someone who catches your eye, you can explore his or her profile a little more deeply. We were pleased to find that the answers to the aforementioned quirky questions appeared on each profile, giving us a bit more insight as to who each dater was. This kind of information regarding everyday habits and casual opinions was much more useful than a stiff rundown of accomplishments or likes and dislikes.

The accuracy of your matches is really up to you. We found that the more questions we answered, the more realistic our matches became. Online dating is always more fun when each person is honest and upfront, and OkCupid emphasizes this rule of thumb.

Communication

Starting a conversation with a match is easy. You can choose to "like" or "star" their profile first, a move that might be considered cyber flirtation. When you'd like to begin, simply click to send a message at the top of their profile and get your opening line ready. We found that responses were somewhat instantaneous on the chat option, but for those who prefer to begin with a lower-pressure conversation there is also a message option.

Conclusion

OkCupid has an undeniable charm that is apparent from the very beginning. The quiz questions put an entirely new spin on what we've come to know as typical personality rundowns. The site puts a great deal of control back in the hands of the daters themselves. The key to success on OkCupid is staying honest and realistic in your profile as well as on each quiz. The more truth there is to your answers, the more effectively the OkCupid system will work for you, so it's worth setting yourself up for a win in the end. The number of extra features works to the user's advantage and allows them to personalize their experience to make it fun and reduce pressure
