Full Review:
Kaplan University is one of the oldest institutions we reviewed, with over 27,000 predominantly online students and roots going back to 1837, when it was originally founded as The American Institute of Commerce. With more than 150 degree programs, Kaplan has the most areas of specialization of any of the schools we reviewed and offers the widest financial aid options.

Best for: Financial aid
If you qualify for scholarships from Kaplan, they could lower your degree's cost by as much as 20%. Additionally, if you are in the military, you could see tuition discounts as much as 38-55%. Kaplan also offers an employee partnership program.

Degrees: Certificates; associate's; bachelor's; master's, MBA

Programs: Arts and sciences, business, Concord Law, criminal justice, education, health sciences, legal studies, nursing, technology Undergrad Cost: $315-371 per credit

Graduate Cost: $368-441 per credit

Post-Graduation Employment:
Kaplan partners with employers to fill their positions through its job placement program. Its website also offers virtual seminars in such topics as job search skills, applying for work overseas, and how to negotiate salary.

Financial Aid:
Kaplan offers many of its own scholarships (for academic achievement, criminal justice students, Phi Theta Kappa, and more) as well as directs you to outside and private scholarships to help fund your education. The application process is also fast and simple: Just submit your paperwork on time!

Resources:
The company behind Kaplan University is known nationwide for its test preparation materials, and the school applies those same learning methods to its online college. It also offers one of the largest research centers on the web, with more than 325,000 volumes, 20,000 periodicals, and more.

Faculty:
Although the school's deans are the only ones with much information available publicly, the student-to-teacher ratio is superb: 10 students per teacher if divided evenly.

Value:
Although Kaplan is more expensive than, for example, AIU at the outset, its financial aid offerings improve the deal. Also, all books and materials are included in your degree's flat price.
