The Biggest Loser, a food delivery plan from eDiets, is designed for fans of the TV show who want to eat similar meals to those that appear on the show. All of the calorie-controlled meals have been reviewed and approved by the Biggest Loser doctor and nutrition experts.

How Does It Taste?

Naturally, dieters are concerned about how a meal plan tastes. We were too. To this end, we conducted an independent taste test of all the meal delivery plans we review. Eight individual tasters participated, sampling a week's worth of the Biggest Loser meals, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. They then rated each meal based on taste and appearance. We compiled all the data and the final results are shown on our Diet Taste Test.

The Biggest Loser placed average among the meals we rated, performing the strongest in the lunch and dinner categories. They also did very well in the snack category, although we didn't include this category in the final results because the majority of the meals plans didn't include snacks. Breakfast is what really brought The Biggest Loser's stats down, scoring only two stars. Overall, for approximately 1,000 calories a day they did okay, especially since most of the other meal delivery plans have a bit of a higher calorie count.

Meals

The Biggest Loser features two different meal plans. The seven-day complete program includes 21 meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week) and a snack or dessert every day. This plan is targeted towards those who prefer as much structure and convenience as possible. The five day 'weekends free' program, which only provides weekday meals, is more flexible and is intended for those who would rather prepare their own low-calorie meals on the weekends.

With both meal plans, your delivered meals come to about 1,000 calories a day. In order to supplement this low calorie count, you are required to add your own fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy. Each member should work with a staff nutritionist to determine how much food they need to add for their weight loss goal.

Each week you can sign on to your online account, or call in, to select which foods you want to receive. This gives you a good amount of leeway in choosing food that you like and avoiding any meals you may dislike.

However, the Biggest Loser is not specifically oriented towards those with dietary needs due to allergies, diabetes, or pregnancy. If you have special dietary concerns, this plan may not be right for you.

The Biggest Loser doesn't count points or emphasize unique diet restrictions and rules. Instead they focus on providing sensible, low-calorie, portion controlled food that has been approved by the Bigger Loser experts. The meals you select will be prepared to order, packed in a refrigerated, chill-fresh container and shipped via FedEx right to your door. You are even able to choose the delivery day, another added convenience feature. Then when your meals appear, all you have to do is heat and eat them.

Support

The Biggest Loser provides a good support structure for participants. Users have email, phone and online chat access to registered dietitians for their nutritional support needs. It's a good idea to check in with one of the staff dieticians when you first start your diet. Depending upon the total daily amount of calories you need, they will guide you towards the amount of type of food you may have to supplement your meals with.

The Biggest Loser also features 24/7 access to online tracking tools designed specifically for the meal plan. The tracking tools allow you to chart your weight and food consumption over time, motivating you to stick with your plan. The nutrition tracker was easy to use and helpful in keeping tabs on our daily calorie count and nutrition breakdown. When you weigh in every week, you have the opportunity to send any comments or concerns to the nutrition staff at the same time.

Fitness

Unfortunately, if you need fitness motivation from your diet meal plan, the Biggest Loser won't provide it. They focus solely on delivering quality meals, and providing online tracking tools and nutritional support. You'll need to look elsewhere for fitness guidance and advice, which we found somewhat ironic given the nature of the TV show the plan is based on.

Pricing

There are two different pricing structures, one for the 5-day plan, and one for the 7-day plan. The 7-day plan includes 21 meals plus 7 snacks for $21.95 per day. The 5-day plan includes 15 meals plus 5 snacks for $23.95 per day. Neither of these prices include the extra $24.95 shipping fee, so make sure to take this cost into account when ordering.

You'll also need to add in the cost of providing your own fruits and dairy. We estimate the cost for these additional foods to be $45-$60 per week. However, our cost was based on what are often substantially higher "city" food prices for San Francisco, and your food cost may be significantly less.

Bottom Line

The Biggest Loser is a good pick for those who enjoy the TV show and would like to follow in the footsteps of the participants by eating freshly prepared, portion-controlled, low-calorie food. It is strictly a meal-based diet plan though. If you'd prefer a similar plan that includes fitness tips and guidance, you might want to take a look at its sister program, eDiets Fresh Prepared.
