17 Day Diet Review

17 Day Diet

Bottom Line:
bistroMD teamed together with author of "The 17 Day Diet" to deliver healthy, good-tasting meal plan; not very customizable; lacks fitness diary

Full Review:
17 Day Diet meal delivery program is brought to you by bistroMD and the author of the hit dieting book "The 17 Day Diet," Dr. Mike Moreno. The goal of both the book and the diet delivery program is to adjust the body's metabolism to burn more fat, brought on by 17-day cycles that trigger weight loss. There are four cycles — Accelerate, Activate, Achieve and Arrive — that provide different benefits and a variety of foods. For example, the first two cycles are aimed at cleansing and removing unhealthy carbohydrates from your diet, then boosting you up to higher calories to prevent boredom. The following two cycles are about stabilizing your metabolism and providing more variety in the food itself so you can maintain your diet.

Though more expensive than bistroMD itself — and lacking its interactive interface, dietitian support and community tools — 17 Day Diet is a solid diet meal delivery program that is great for those who are simply interested in healthy, delicious meals based on a popular weight-loss method.

How Does it Taste?

Taste is important when you're dieting, especially if you're trying to stick to your plan. With this in mind, we conducted our own independent taste test with opinions from 14 individual tasters. The testers sampled meals from all the meal delivery programs we review, and provided ratings for taste, appearance and satisfaction/serving size. We then took all of the data and created our annual meal delivery taste test. This year, 17 Day Diet took second place for taste, just a half-star behind our top-rated service Jenny Craig. Testers made comments that the food "had good flavor but weird texture." It ranked the highest in appearance with a 5 out of 5 and was one of the top-rated on the satisfaction scale as well.

Plans and Pricing

While some of the other diet meal delivery programs offer five-day plans for dieters looking for some flexibility on the weekends, 17 Day Diet has only one option — its seven-day meal plan, which is 21 meals, for $184.90/week. This means you will get three meals per day at about $26/day. You will also get free shipping for the duration of your membership, which is a nice perk. The program is set up for automatic delivery at sign up, meaning you'll receive your shipment of 21 meals every week. If you decide you no longer want to receive meals from 17 Day Diet, you'll need to contact the customer service team to cancel your subscription.

Meals

17 Day Diet delivers seven days of breakfast, lunch and dinner meals, which comes out to 21 separate meals at 1,200 calories per day. These frozen meals are ready after a couple minutes in the microwave and come in relatively hearty portions. Of course, fullness and satisfaction varies from person to person, but generally we found each meal size to be solid. There is no need to add supplementary food items to your diet while you are on the program. Coffee is allowed with this diet and you can add a pinch of salt to your meals, however Dr. Moreno suggests using different herbs and spices as a healthier alternative to salt.

This program isn't as customizable as some of the other services we've seen, and it does not have a vegetarian option. If you have any specific allergies or dietary restrictions, however, you can contact customer support and ask them to substitute these foods for something else. Like bistroMD, 17 Day Diet is also safe for diabetics. Weight loss varies by individual, and while the book says people have lost up to 10-15 pounds in 17 days, this program recommends that users will lose weight at a healthy rate, with one to two pounds per week being typical, although depending on the individual, could be more or could be less.

When we received the meals, we were surprised that they came in the same packaging as the bistroMD program. In fact, many of the meals were the same as bistroMD's. Though the food is the same, 17 Day Diet differs in that it arranges the meals to fit the four 17-day cycles mentioned in the introduction — Accelerate, Activate, Achieve and Arrive.

Support and Fitness

Unfortunately, 17 Day Diet does not offer any fitness tools or access to registered dietitians like bistroMD. What it does offer in this aspect are links to companion books you can purchase that provide exercise tips and additional support for losing weight. Its customer support team can be reached by email or phone Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET (and until 6 p.m. ET on Wednesdays). We never experienced much of a wait time when calling, and the representatives helped us make any changes or cancellations a simple and painless process. It's important to note that if you need to make changes to your order, you have from the day you receive your first shipment until Sunday at midnight ET to make changes to the next week of meals. After your first week, all changes must be made by Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET before the next week's shipment.

Conclusion

When your diet tastes good, it's much easier to stick with. 17 Day Diet helps keep boredom at bay by mixing up your diet and providing variety. Though the service lacks any sort of fitness tools and is pricier than others we review, $26/day isn't too much if you consider not buying any food in addition to the diet program. By combining good-tasting food from bistroMD with Dr. Moreno's 17-day cycle method, this meal delivery diet program is a great choice for anyone willing to pay a little extra for diet success.
