Microsoft takes over Skype
Posted by Sarah

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Skype CEO Tony Bates shake hands in May at a San Francisco news conference, predicting what was to come.
Skype is famous for its computer-to-computer calling, but it also provides VoIP. However, Microsoft's takeover of Skype might change a few things within the company.
Over the weekend, the Federal Trade Commission terminated its review of the proposed acquisition early, which means that it is not believed to harm competition or impact consumers in a negative way. Microsoft has already purchased Skype for $8.5 billion, and it's shaking up the infrastructure by firing many of Skype's senior executives. But how will it change the service?
Microsoft is being coy about that aspect. It says it's going to expand Skype and operate it separately within Microsoft, and speculation is that Skype will become a part of Microsoft's digital advertising and business conferencing. Skype is also planning to integrate better with Facebook, which means users will be able to chat with Facebook fans and friends through Skype. Finally, some mobile innovations might be in the works. All this will likely result in a better business VoIP offering from Skype, but we'll be sure to update you when the changes come through.
Facebook users more trusting, survey says
Posted by Sarah
In the wake of our recent post about staying safe on Facebook, this news comes as no surprise to us. According to a new survey from the Pew Research Center, Facebook users are more trusting, have more close relationships, and are more socially involved with others compared to the average American. The cynical among us might say, "Of course you don't put any personal information on Facebook!" But the majority of Facebook users among us are more trusting, more glass-half-full types. So we just need to temper our trust with a healthy dose of caution—and possibly a service that protects against identity theft. What do you think?

NextAdvisor launches review of PeopleSmart!
Posted by Sarah
Today, we here at NextAdvisor launched a new review of a people search/background check service: PeopleSmart! It's a rather cute service with a fun interface, but it performed much better for basic information (address history, property records, contact info) than for more extensive background checks. It's also got a confusing credit system for purchasing reports, but at least the company has a sense of humor about the whole thing, saying,"It's like using tokens in a really weird arcade." You can see our other reviews of people search services here.
Woman gets (fake) tattoo of Facebook friends
Posted by Sarah

We couldn't let this news pass by without commenting. This woman has 152 Facebook friends, and she took video showing her getting a sleeve tattoo of profile picture thumbnails of every single one. Although it turned out to be nothing more than an advertising stunt, such a tattoo could raise some serious questions. She claimed to have gotten the permission of all of her friends, but could having your face on somebody's body put your identity at risk?
We say probably not, in this case. The images are pretty small, and no names are given. The biggest problem anyone might have with this tattoo is its lack of clarity!
Congressman Weiner reminds us to keep our info safe!

Another great tip learned from Rep. Weiner: Never take compromising photos of yourself, and definitely never send them to anyone!
So it turns out that Representative Anthony Weiner's (D-New York) Twitter photo scandal wasn't a hack after all. But let it still be a reminder to keep your confidential information safe with identity theft protection services and to change your password!
