VirusScan Plus has the same highly-rated virus-scanning capabilities, but lacks the identity theft protection, email spam filtering, parental controls and data backup capabilities of the Internet Security suite.

When I was in school, back-to-school shopping involved buying pencils, erasers, and Trapper Keepers of ever-increasing complexity. That was in the last century. Today, it's a different world, which is why McAfee wants to send us back to school with their Total Protection 2009 Internet security package. When we reviewed it here, we found it to be the best stand-alone Internet security software for the money. Their current 50%-off promotion now brings it down to $39.99, ten bucks cheaper than it was before, and the same price as the former cost-cutting champs we reviewed. The back-to-school promotion runs until September 17th, and no coupon is required. Just follow the links from our reviews, or right here in the blog. The Total Protection 2009 product offers protection against viruses, spyware, phishing, spam, and several other things that I never had to worry about with my Trapper Keeper.

McAfee recently conducted a study to identify the most dangerous Internet search terms. Searches for these words are most likely to lead Internet users to pages containing malware. The study tested thousands of keywords using Google, Yahoo, AOL and Ask, and analyzed hundreds of thousands of web pages.

Searches for screensavers, free games, work from home opportunities, the Olympics, videos, celebrities, music and news were found to be the riskiest, in terms of exposure to viruses and hackers. As far as specific terms, "word unscrambler," "lyrics," "myspace," "free music downloads," "phelps," "game cheats," "printable fill-in puzzles," "free ringtones" and "solitaire" were the most dangerous.

Google and other search engines seem trustworthy, but they can't weed out all the potentially dangerous web sites. For that, you need Internet security software. To learn more about McAfee and other anti-virus programs, see our reviews and comparison chart.

We've got a new, exclusive 25% off promotion code for McAfee VirusScan Plus. Just click here to go to McAfee's site and enter promo code "Next25" at checkout. Note that McAfee is currently offering 25% off this product already and that our discount will be on top of that, so you will get it for 50% off with our McAfee coupon code! That makes it just $19.99.

McAfee is still offering 50% off the more full-featured McAfee Total Protection when you click on the link from our review. We recommend Total Protection over VirusScan because it has everything VirusScan does plus more advance features like identity protection, anti-spam, parental controls, network monitoring and link checking. We think it's worth the extra money for all the protection you get. You don't need any promotion code for Total Protection, just use the link from our review and the 50% will automatically be applied.
