Weight Watchers subscribers who own iPhones now have an additional tool to help them keep track of their diets: their very own iPhone app. The Weight Watchers app, free to the diet plan's subscribers, packs in a number of useful features including a POINTS calculator, a database of over 30,000 recipes, and a Weight Watchers meeting locator. The calculator, which allows subscribers to keep track of their meals and activities, looks particularly useful.

To get the app, follow the link to the iTunes store. Once the app is downloaded, it will require your login credentials.

The Jenny Craig program is flexible enough to allow you to prepare your own meals and eat at restaurants, so if you prefer not to eat prepackaged Jenny's Cuisine meals on the weekends, that could be incorporated in your customized plan. Jenny Craig does not automatically reship food, so if you do not actually use your entire four week supply within four week, it shouldn't cause any problems.

$350,000 for acai berry drink customers

A couple of weeks ago, Joe blogged about the acai berry and the outlandish claims made about its supposed health benefits. Yesterday, Arizona's Attorney General announced a settlement with Central Coast Nutraceuticals, an Arizona based company that markets an acai drink. The company has agreed to pay a record $1,375,000 to settle a lawsuit over their deceptive practices. $350,000 will be distributed among consumers who were scammed or misled by Central Coast Nutraceuticals. The Better Business Bureau received over 2200 complaints about the company in one year. Many of these complaints came from customers who attempted to take advantage of a "risk-free trial offer" and were charged for other products and services that they did not request. Their calls and emails were ignored when they attempted to contact Central Coast Nutraceuticals regarding these charges.

Mandatory calorie information at chain restaurants?

Several states and large cities have already passed laws requiring restaurant chains to display calorie counts on their menus. While the impacted business owners have protested against these laws in the past, the restaurant industry now supports a bill that would mandate calories on menus nationwide. The Menu Education and Labeling (MEAL) act is sponsored by Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski and Democrat Senators Tom Carper and Tom Harkin and is backed by the National Restaurant Association and National Council of Chain Restaurants, as well as several health groups, including the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. The senators stated that under the proposed law, consumers would also be able to request other nutrition information, such as fat, sodium, and carbohydrate contents. While the majority of restaurants would naturally prefer not to list calorie information at all, a national bill would at least impose consistency on the labeling system, as opposed to a series of state and local bills with differing requirements.

The Menu Education and Labeling act would, of course, be great news for dieters. Many diet programs emphasize calorie counting or following a specific nutrition regime, and dining at restaurants can sometimes derail a strict diet plan. Having nutrition information available would certainly help those who are watching their weight overcome the challenge of integrating restaurant meals into their plans.
