Best Discover credit card for youTime and time again, Discover has proven itself to be a consumer favorite, taking the top spot three years running (2014, 2015 and 2016) in the J.D. Power U.S. Consumer Credit Card Satisfaction Study. Like many of its fellow credit card issuers, Discover has more than one credit card out there, which means whether you are new to Discover or not, there’s probably at least one card you haven’t considered before. This can make it difficult to decide which card’s features and benefits will be right for you. To help you out, we’re detailing what features Discover offers to all of its cardholders and helping you choose which is the best Discover credit card for your specific needs. Dive in to explore what Discover credit cards are all about.

What does Discover offer to all its customers?

While each Discover credit card has its own specific features, there are a few benefits that all Discover credit cards can enjoy, including Freeze it and recently unveiled identity theft protection alerts. The Freeze it feature allows a customer to freeze (or lock) their card from their smartphone or computer in the event it’s lost or stolen, preventing new purchases, cash advances and balance transfers from being made. New identity theft protection alerts from Discover let cardholders know if any new accounts are opened using their information, as well as if their social security number is detected on any of the dangerous websites it monitors. While cardholders will automatically get access to the Freeze it feature, they must activate the identity theft protection feature via their Discover online account to receive it. Finally, Discover prints Experian FICO credit scores on monthly billing statements to help customers keep an eye on their credit progress (note that looking at credit scores from a single bureau is less thorough than seeing scores and reports from all three bureaus, but it’s still better than nothing).

Now that you know what you can expect from any of the cards you have to choose from, how do you decide which of the best Discover credit cards is perfect for you?

Which is the best Discover credit card for you?

Best Discover Credit Cards
Best for earning cash back: Discover it – Cashback Match

Best Discover Credit CardIf you’re looking for a credit card to earn a hefty amount of cash back with, Discover it – Cashback Match is the card for you. It earns 5% cash back on purchases made in special categories which rotate on a quarterly basis (up to the maximum, currently $1,500/quarter, in combined purchases, then it’s 1%). These categories in the past have included home improvement stores, wholesale clubs, restaurants and more. While cardholders are required to activate the 5% back every quarter, Discover makes things easy with online or email alerts. In addition, every purchase you make outside these categories will earn an unlimited 1% cash back. Finally, at the end of your first year, Discover will match all the cash back you earned over your first 12 months. That means you could turn $400 into $800! Redemption is a breeze — choose from a variety of options, including direct deposit, statement credit, Amazon.com purchases and gift cards. Rounding out this card’s features are no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees and a 14-month 0% intro APR on both purchases and balance transfers (note that there is a 3% balance transfer fee). This card is available to those with average credit or better (typically considered a score of 670 or higher), making it an excellent choice for people who might have a few dings on their credit history.

Those who’d prefer a card without rotating categories will want to check out Discover it chrome, which earns 2% cash back at restaurants and gas stations (up to the quarterly maximum, currently $1,000, in combined purchases, then it’s 1%) and 1% on all other purchases. The card also matches all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year, offers a 14-month 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (with a 3% balance transfer fee) and has no annual fee.

Best for balance transfers: Discover it – 18 Month Balance Transfer Offer

Best Discover Credit CardOne of the best credit cards for balance transfers all around, Discover it – 18 Month Balance Transfer Offer combines an outstanding long 0% intro APR on balance transfers with the ability to earn ongoing rewards on purchases. That means it’s a card you’re going to want to keep in your wallet long after you pay off your transferred balance. In addition to 18 months of 0% intro APR on transferred balances, you’ll get 6 months of 0% intro APR on purchases. Cash back is earned at a rate of 5% on purchases within quarterly rotating categories — such as restaurants, ground transportation, Amazon.com purchases and more — as well as 1% cash back on everything else. You can earn 5% up to a quarterly maximum, currently $1,500, in combined purchases, after which purchases will earn 1%. Similar to Discover it – Cashback Match (detailed above), cardholders are required to active the 5% back every quarter, but Discover will remind you when it’s time to do so. As an added bonus, Discover will match all the cash back you earn in your first year as a cardholder at the end of the year! That means $500 cash back earned will be matched, making your total cash back earned for the year $1,000. While this card does charge a 3% balance transfer fee, there aren’t any annual or foreign transaction fees to worry about, and you can apply if you have average credit or better.

Best for travelers: Discover it Miles

Best Discover Credit CardGot the travel bug? Then Discover it Miles is the ideal credit card for you, as it earns an unlimited 1.5X miles per $1 spent on all purchases, plus has a special bonus that matches all the miles you earn in your first year. That effectively means you’re earning 3X miles per $1 spent during your first year. This card scored well in our 2017 Travel Rewards Credit Card Analysis, with an average flight and hotel value of $1.50 per $100 spent. Miles can be redeemed for a direct deposit into your bank account or as a statement credit to cover travel purchases made with your Discover card. In addition to all of these great perks, cardholders also get a 0% intro APR on purchases for the first 14 months and pay no annual fee or foreign transaction fees (making it a great choice for world travelers). Similar to other cards we’ve detailed in this post, this one requires average credit or better for approval.

Best for students: Discover it for Students

Best Discover Credit CardStarting off early when it comes to building and managing credit is important, which is why Discover offers a credit card geared specifically toward college students. Discover it for Students features the same 5% cash back in rotating categories (up to the quarterly maximum, currently $1,500) that several other cards we’ve already highlighted offer (note that cardholders need to active the 5% back each quarter), as well as the intro bonus that matches all the cash back earned within the first year. Purchases made outside the quarterly 5% categories earn an unlimited 1% cash back, and students can also get rewarded for having good grades — Discover will give you $20 cash back for every school year your GPA is a 3.0 or higher (for up to 5 years). Because this is a card geared toward students who often don’t have much in the way of established credit, Discover it for Students is available to those with fair credit or better. In addition to the benefits already outlined, cardholders will enjoy a 6-month 0% intro APR on purchases, no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.

It should be mentioned that Discover also offers a student card called Discover it chrome for Students, which is a better option for students who don’t want to deal with rotating categories. This card earns 2% cash back at restaurants and gas stations (up to the quarterly maximum, currently $1,000, in combined purchases, then it’s 1%) and 1% on all other purchases, has no annual fee and offers a 6-month 0% intro APR on purchases.

Best for rebuilding credit: Discover it Secured Card

Best Discover Credit Card If you have poor credit or need to establish credit, then a secured credit card is ideal, as these cards look and act just like regular credit cards, but require a refundable deposit to secure your funds and most report to all three credit bureaus to help you build credit. Discover it Secured Credit Card is a great choice, as it has no annual fee and earns 2% cash back on purchases at U.S. gas stations and restaurants (on up to the quarterly maximum, currently $1,000, in combined purchases, then it’s 1%) and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Cardholders will benefit from the cash back match bonus, which matches all of the cash back they’ve earned at the end their first year, too, which isn’t something you usually see with a secured credit card. This card requires an initial security deposit of $200 to $2,000 to fund your credit line. It reports your payments to the three credit bureaus to help you build credit, and starting at 8 months, Discover will automatically begin reviewing your account to see if you can be transitioned to a non-secured credit line.

Discover requires cardholders to activate the 5% back earnings every quarter, but it will remind you when it’s time to do so.
