What Is the Cheapest Online Tax Service?
Posted by Jeff Hindenach
Q: I want to do my taxes online but I don't want to pay a lot? My return should be pretty simple.
A: Well, if your return is simple enough to fill out a 1040EZ form, then you can file your taxes for free with any of the online tax services we review. The best of those are H&R Block, which has great customer support, and TurboTax, which has a simple and easy-to-understand interface.
If you have a more complicated return, then TaxACT is the best online tax service for a cheaper filing. It allows free filing for 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040 forms, but also has a Deluxe package that helps with more complicated tax returns for people who own a home or have dealt with investments in the past year. TaxACT's Deluxe plan is $9.95, compared to Deluxe plans for H&R Block, which is $25.46, and TurboTax, which is $29.99.
TaxACT also offers a cheaper option for your state taxes. It costs only $14.95 to file your state taxes with a free federal return, or if you choose the Deluxe federal plan, you only pay $8 for your state taxes. H&R Block's state tax filing plans range fromĀ $27.95 – $34.95 and TurboTax's areĀ $36.99.
TaxACT is also very simple to use and has reliable customer service. It's a great value for those that don't have very complicated tax returns. To read our full review of TaxACT, click here.
