Can Online Tax Services Do Your State Taxes?

Posted by Jeff

Q: Are you able to do the Colorado state return on online tax services? At what level do you have to be to get that return and at what cost?

A: All of the tax services that we review can do state taxes for all 50 states. Most also customize your user experience to ask you questions based solely on your state's tax rules. The only issue is that not all states accept e-filing, so some users may have to print out their returns and mail them in. Luckily, Colorado does accept e-filing.

As for the price, most services have a separate fee for state taxes, so even if you use the free federal return, it is the same price. In some cases, such as with TaxACT, they will discount your state return if you upgrade to the Deluxe package. TaxACT also offers the cheapest price for state filings at $14.95. H&R Block ($27.95 – $34.95) and TurboTax ($36.95) are more expensive, but are more comprehensive with the features and extras that they include.
