Can I Re-Install my Security Software Without the Disk?

October 7th, 2011 - Posted by jeff

Q: I already have CA 2010 Internet Security Suite but had to uninstall it and I don't have the disk, my son has it at school. Can you tell me how to reinstall it using the code I was given?

A: Luckily, most Internet Security Software suites now allow you to download their products from their websites. To access your CA 2010 Internet Security Suite, you need your order number and password or your email address and the last five digits of the credit card you used to buy the suite. Then go to findmyorder.com and enter in the information. It will take you to a screen that lists the products that you have purchased from CA. Each product will have a download button so that you can easily re-download the software. If you have any issues, or don’t remember some of the information needed, CA has a dedicated support system to help you.

Does Carbonite Save My Backed Up Files if My Service Lapsed?

October 6th, 2011 - Posted by polina

Q: My Carbonite service has lapsed, can I renew it? Will Carbonite still have my backed up files from about 6 months ago?

A: Carbonite offers subscriptions of 1 to 3 years. After your subscription has expired, you have 30 days to renew it. Carbonite keeps all of your data (that was backed up within the 1 to 3 year period) only within this 30 day grace period. After 30 days, they remove the backed up data and it will not be available for restore. Note that Carbonite will notify its users when their account is approaching expiration; however, if you choose the "renew automatically" option on your account, Carbonite will renew your service for you by charging your credit card before your subscription expires.  In relation to service renewal, SpiderOak also renews your subscription automatically — no need to manually re-subscribe.

SugarSync, another top-rated online backup service, allows you to restore files when you re-install the program on a computer where it was already been previously installed. SugarSync detects that the software was previously installed, and the installation process changes automatically to give you a choice: "Do you want to restore the Sync Folders that were selected in the previous installation?" No need to worry about your old files being lost forever.

Does the Capital One Venture Rewards Card Earn 2 Miles on Every Purchase in ANY Type of Retail Place?

October 6th, 2011 - Posted by Tasha

Q:  Does the Capital One® VentureSM Rewards card earn 2 miles per $1 spent on every purchase in ANY type of retail place, and how soon will I earn the 25,000 bonus points? Can you redeem earned points for any travel expense including airfare, hotel and car rental?

A: According to Capital One themselves, the Capital One® VentureSM Rewards card earns 2 miles on every type of purchase, including warehouse purchases like Costco. The only exclusions are that you earn miles based on net purchases (purchases minus any credits or returns) only. Also, checks used to access your account will not earn rewards. After spending $1,000 within the first 3 months of your enrollment, you'll earn 25,000 bonus miles.  These miles will be applied to your account within two billing cycles of qualifying for this bonus.

Your earned miles won't expire and you can redeem them for any travel expense, including airfare, hotel and car rental. You can also redeem miles for a whole bunch of other things, including cash, gift cards and brand-name merchandise. You have 2 options to redeem your miles for travel:

1.  Contact the Capital One Rewards Center at their toll-free number to book your travel.  OR
2.  Purchase your travel anywhere you choose—online, in person, or over the phone—with your Venture Rewards card. You’ll then have 90 days from the date your travel purchase posts to your account get reimbursed for the cost of the travel purchase. To get reimbursed, call the Capital One Rewards Center or redeem your miles online at www.capitalone.com/nohasslerewards.

We really like the Capital One Venture Rewards card because of it's high mile earning potential. At 2 miles earned for every $1 spent, it offers almost twice the earnings of most other travel cards. Also, the miles you earn won't expire and there are no caps on the number of miles you can earn (unlimited miles!). Or, take a gander at the other travel reward credit cards we've reviewed and pick one that fits your lifestyle.

Does Carbonite Only Back Up Your Files Once a Year?

October 5th, 2011 - Posted by jeff

Q: Does Carbonite only back up your files once a year or does it do it periodically?

A: Excellent question! When you first install Carbonite on your computer, it will give you the choice to back up all of your Documents/Settings and User files or to select which files you would like to back up. If you want more than just your Documents/Settings and User files backed up (which do not include emails), we would suggest choosing the option that lets you select which files to back up. You can always add files to back up at any time once Carbonite is installed.

Once you choose which files you want to back up, Carbonite will do a one-time all-inclusive back up of all of those files, transferring all your encrypted files over a secure network. After all of your files are on the Carbonite servers, the system will continue to back up any new versions of those files if you make any changes to them. The software uses Volume Shadowcopy Service, which keeps a copy of files that you have open so that they can easily be backed up once they are modified. And the best part is that all of Carbonite’s back up services run quietly in the background, so that you never have to worry about back ups interrupting your work. If you want to know more about Carbonite, read our review here.

Do you Need a Phone Line to send an Internet Fax?

Q: Do you need a phone line to send an Internet Fax?

Source: Creative Commons, Idaconcepts

A: The only thing you need in order to send an Internet fax is an Internet connection and an account with an Internet fax service – no phone lines necessary. One of our favorites is MetroFax, which offers a 30-day free trial and allows you to send and receive 500 faxes in a month. It is one of the cheapest Internet fax services at $6.63 per month, and definitely one of the fastest. While MetroFax charges $2.00 extra per month for a toll-free number, MyFax, which is $9.17 per month, lets you pick a free one. If you are looking for the cheapest option, Nextiva also allows you 500 faxes, and is the cheapest service at $4.95 per month for the annual plan. Again, all you need is an Internet connection, which means you can even send faxes from your mobile phone!

Q: I Just Got Another PC, How Can I Get all my Files and Emails from Carbonite?

A: Congratulations on your new computer! If you have Carbonite 4.0, there is a restore option that allows you to put all of your files in the right place on your new system.

From your new PC, go to the Carbonite website and log into your account. Here you will see a list of all the computers under your account, as well as all of the files. If you want to restore every file onto your new system, click Restore for the specific backup you want to transfer. From the pop-up box, click Complete Restore. Note that if you used Outlook on your retired PC and kept it connected to "documents and settings", your emails will be restored as well.

VOIPo, one of our favorites thanks to its simplicity, doesn't require any software downloads, and you don't need to go on your computer to use it. Just plug into the broadband connection and use your regular phone. Phone Power and Phone.com services use a broadband connection as well. Whether you're plugging into a cable or dsl modem, they will connect to your phone power servers quickly and efficiently.
