Do any of your identity theft protection services monitor for social security theft and who is applying for your credit?
June 27th, 2011 - Posted by Tasha
The following is an actual user-submitted question:
Q: Do any of your identity theft protection services monitor for social security theft and who is applying for your credit?
A: Yes, they do. Both IDENTITY GUARD® and Trusted ID, our top identity theft protection services, would be a great choice for you. As soon as you sign up for Trusted ID it begins monitoring the Internet black market for any suspicious use of personal information like your Social Security number, credit cards or bank accounts. It uses the Social Security number you entered when signing up, but you'll need to add your bank account and credit card numbers.
Trusted ID also monitors all 3 credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and will alert you if it sees any changes. 3-bureau credit monitoring is a great way to stay in constant touch with your credit history, and will let you know if anyone is applying for credit using your personal information. In addition you'll get all 3 credit reports and credit scores at sign up—free of charge.
But Trusted ID doesn't stop there, it includes a whole host of extras like medical record protection and a suite of identity theft protection tools with free anti-spyware software and free anti-phishing software. Right now Trusted ID is offering a free 14-day trial to NextAdvisor readers, so it's a good time to sign up and try it out without having to pay. If you're not happy with the service, just cancel during the trial period and you won't have to pay a cent. Plus, you'll get all 3-bureau credit scores and reports free of charge.

The following is an actual user-submitted question:
Q: Which credit report monitoring service includes monthly credit score updates?
A: All credit report monitoring services do what their name implies, which is monitoring your credit report(s) and alerting you if there are any changes. However, only one of our top reviewed services also provides monthly updates to all 3 of your credit reports and scores—PrivacyGuard. In addition to 3-bureau credit monitoring and updated monthly credit reports and scores, PrivacyGuard includes a wide array of identity theft protection features, information, and financial calculators. Users also get Norton Internet Security Online with their subscription.
Right now PrivacyGuard is offering a 30-day $1 trial to NextAdvisor readers. With this trial you'll get all 3 credit reports and scores and the other features mentioned above. After the 30-day trial PrivacyGuard is just $14.99, which we think is a pretty great deal for such a robust service.

What are the education requirements for getting an RN degree online?
June 22nd, 2011 - Posted by Sarah
The following is an actual user-submitted question:
Q. I was reading on this website's FAQ where it said you can study to get your RN online, but when I tried to fill out the form for more information, an error appeared stating that I do not meet the educational requirements for the program. What are the education requirements for getting an RN degree online?
A. This is a good question, but the answer might be a little confusing. State education guidelines require hands-on training in a classroom or in a clinical setting for licensure as an RN. Western Governor's University is the only online program that offers a BS in Nursing (Prelicensure). This prepares you to sit for the national NCLEX RN licensing exam. Your clinical education includes working in simulated labs, followed by offsite agency-based clinical intensives where you'll master patient care skills and competencies. However, the availability of this program varies from state to state.
In order to qualify for this program, you must (from WGU's website):
- "Possess a current CPR certification at the Healthcare Provider Level.
- Take and pass the ATI TEAS V Exam at the “Proficient,” “Advanced,” or “Exemplary” Level. Click here to learn more about the TEAS V Exam.
- Submit at least one letter of recommendation from your current healthcare employer.
- Submit official transcripts from all previous institutions that show:
- You have earned a bachelor’s or associate’s degree AND/OR
- You have completed the program admissions prerequisites in Liberal Arts and Sciences and Behavioral Sciences
- You have completed all nursing-related science prerequisites in:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Microbiology
- Biochemistry"
Once you have achieved RN status through this program or a different onsite program, many online colleges, such as Kaplan and Walden, allow you to advance past that—to a BSN.
Where can I write to and have free credit reports mailed back to me?
June 20th, 2011 - Posted by Tasha
Q: Where can I write to and have free credit reports mailed back to me?
A: Everyone is entitled to request their free credit reports once a year from each of the 3 credit bureaus; Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can request your reports online, by phone or by mail at annualcreditreport.com. However, in order to mail in your request you'll need to go online and download the request form. You can download this form and get directions on how to request your credit report click here.
Although getting your free credit reports every 12 months is a smart idea, getting them more frequently is better. You can get your credit reports for $1 when you sign up for PrivacyGuard's 30-day trial, a top credit monitoring service we review on our site. Not only that, but you'll get updated credit scores and reports every month! You'll also be alerted to any changes in your credit reports, helping you stay on top of your credit reports day and night. Overall, PrivacyGuard is a great deal for anyone who wants to have their pulse on what's going on with their credit history.
Microsoft takes over Skype
June 20th, 2011 - Posted by Sarah

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Skype CEO Tony Bates shake hands in May at a San Francisco news conference, predicting what was to come.
Skype is famous for its computer-to-computer calling, but it also provides VoIP. However, Microsoft's takeover of Skype might change a few things within the company.
Over the weekend, the Federal Trade Commission terminated its review of the proposed acquisition early, which means that it is not believed to harm competition or impact consumers in a negative way. Microsoft has already purchased Skype for $8.5 billion, and it's shaking up the infrastructure by firing many of Skype's senior executives. But how will it change the service?
Microsoft is being coy about that aspect. It says it's going to expand Skype and operate it separately within Microsoft, and speculation is that Skype will become a part of Microsoft's digital advertising and business conferencing. Skype is also planning to integrate better with Facebook, which means users will be able to chat with Facebook fans and friends through Skype. Finally, some mobile innovations might be in the works. All this will likely result in a better business VoIP offering from Skype, but we'll be sure to update you when the changes come through.
Facebook users more trusting, survey says
June 17th, 2011 - Posted by Sarah
In the wake of our recent post about staying safe on Facebook, this news comes as no surprise to us. According to a new survey from the Pew Research Center, Facebook users are more trusting, have more close relationships, and are more socially involved with others compared to the average American. The cynical among us might say, "Of course you don't put any personal information on Facebook!" But the majority of Facebook users among us are more trusting, more glass-half-full types. So we just need to temper our trust with a healthy dose of caution—and possibly a service that protects against identity theft. What do you think?
