SugarSync discount: 29% off annual plans

May 12th, 2011 - Posted by Kent

SugarSync, one of our favorite online backup services, is currently offering an additional 15% off of its annual plans. Combined with its normal annual-plan discount, the discount comes out to 29%. That means 30GB of backup, syncing, and music streaming for only $42.49 per year, the equivalent of only $3.54 per month. Need more space? A 60GB plan is only $84.99, the equivalent of only $7.08 per month.

SugarSync is seriously awesome online backup that allows users to keep up to five computers backed up. A fantastic smartphone app gives you access to music, photos, and other items on the go.

Check out our SugarSync review, or head over to SugarSync to purchase. No coupon code is required, but you must follow a link from NextAdvisor to receive the discount.

Is Google's new online movie rental poised to end Netflix?

Will Android's new movie-rental service make dinosaurs out of online DVD rental?

A few days ago at Google I/O, Google's yearly developer conference in San Francisco, the company made public a new movie-rental service for the Android Market. It'll roll out soon to Market applications on Android devices: handsets, tablet computers, PCs, and laptops. Users will be able to stream these movie rentals from the cloud, making it easy to watch your favorite films on the go.

But is this the best movie-viewing deal? Android Market rental prices start at $1.99, but most titles cost $3.99 for a 30-day movie rental. But once you start watching your movie, the countdown begins: You have 24 hours to watch it before the rental expires.

This is in stark contrast to Netflix, whose online DVD service starts at $8.99 a month. But for $13.99 per month, you can get two DVDs at a time mailed to your front door with no monthly limit. Suppose you watch one movie a week (that's about four/month). You'd average a cost of $16 a month on your Android Market device. But with Netflix, you'd save 13%! Those savings only increase as you watch more movies each month.

So is this the beginning of the end for online DVD rental? Not by a long shot. Right now, these services are far more cost-effective than the Android cloud streaming. And most people would rather watch a movie on their big-screen TVs than on the tiny screen of a phone.

Carbonite is turned off. How do I get it restarted?

May 11th, 2011 - Posted by Kent

The following is an actual user-submitted question:

Q: My computer crashed and was taken by my kids to the local Data Doctor who has it running well, only Carbonite is turned off. How do I get it restarted?

A: If Carbonite is still installed on your computer, it should be as easy as opening up Carbonite. You may have to run the setup again. If that doesn't work, try downloading the Carbonite client again and running the setup that way. You didn't mention if you need to restore any lost files after the crash. If so, you'll want to "freeze" your backup using the Carbonite online interface before turning on Carbonite again. Once the client is installed, and you've restored any missing files, you can unfreeze the backup set. Find more detailed information on freezing your backup set here.

Savings accounts: Are you saving enough?

May 10th, 2011 - Posted by Sarah

Good news, folks: Due to the recession, Americans are saving 400 percent more on average than they were in 2005, according to the Financial Services Roundtable. Even if you're saving more than this now, you can never save too much money.

You want to start with a small amount. Just five percent of your monthly income can equal years of financial security; if you can put even more away in a savings account, that amount can skyrocket. Try to automate your deposits to your account, too; it takes the thinking and hesitation out of the savings process. Reward yourself every so often for sticking to your savings goals: Doing something nice for yourself, even if you have to spend a little bit of your saved money, will keep you motivated.

Finally, U.S. News & World Report advises us to consider high-yield savings accounts at online banks. Why? Because online savings accounts can offer higher interest rates due to lower overheads. Here are the best highest-earning online savings accounts:

Discover: 1.15% APY, $500.00 to open, $0.00 minimum balance, no monthly fees

Ally: 1% APY, $0.00 to open, $0.00 minimum balance, no monthly fees

ING: 1% APY, $0.00 to open, $0.00 minimum balance, no monthly fees

It's never too late to open an online savings account and start planning for the future!

I just filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and it was discharged in February. How long should I wait to see how my score and credit changed?

May 10th, 2011 - Posted by Tasha

Q.  I just filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and it was discharged in February.  How long should I wait to see how my score and credit changed?  I had excellent credit and FICO scores before.

A. Based on the way you worded your question, it sounds like the date you filed for Chapter 7 and the date it was discharged were fairly close together.  Unfortunately bankruptcy proceeding (whether they were discharged or not) stay on your credit reports for 10 years from the date of filing, so it's likely your credit score will be affected for that amount of time.  To learn more about how long information stays on your credit reports, take a look at our Credit Report Statute of Limitations blog post.

This is a good time to check your all 3 of your current credit reports to make sure they are correct.  It's also a good time to start rebuilding your credit history.  If you had to give up your credit cards in the bankruptcy proceedings, one option is applying for a secured credit card.  Paying off a secured credit card on a timely basis can help rebuild your credit.

Study shows that Facebook has underage users, exposes computers to viruses

May 10th, 2011 - Posted by Kent

A recent survey by Consumer Reports has shown that Facebook has a bit of a problem with it's age control restrictions. The social networking site is technically restricted to individuals of age 13 or older, a rule that did not stop 7.5 million underage users from signing up. Facebook, like many age restricted sites, relies on user honesty—something in relatively short supply on the Internet.

Why does this matter? Facebook is more than a great waste of time; as the report points out it's also a breeding ground for computer viruses, an information market for identity thieves, and a playground for cyberbullies. Over 5 million computers were hit by Facebook-related viruses and 1 million children were the victims of cyberbullying.

According to the study, a lot of parents just don't care. But they should. The Internet is awesome, but it can be scary and dangerous too. We've chronicled the many, many iterations of Facebook's privacy controls which are murky and counterintuitive even to paranoid and computer-savvy adults. A kid may be smart enough to lie about his age, but is probably not aware enough to understand the dangers inherent in oversharing personal information.

While Facebook is working on the problem, mostly in the form of parental education, parents who care can take a more active role in keeping their kids and their computers safe. Parental control software can help monitor online behavior, including social networking activities. Internet security software helps to keep computers safe from viruses and other malware that can compromise a family's security. Finally, parents should consider investing in identity theft protection which can keep them and their family's financial future safe from criminals both online and off.

I have a lifetime membership in Weight Watchers. Won't that affect my sign-up price?

May 10th, 2011 - Posted by Sarah

The following is an actual user-submitted question:

Q. I have a Lifetime membership in Weight Watchers. Won't that affect my online sign-up price?

A. Sadly, it won't. From the website:

"There is no Lifetime membership discount for Weight Watchers Online and there is both a sign-up fee and a monthly charge. If you continue to attend Weight Watchers Meetings, we suggest you subscribe to Weight Watchers eTools; but if you are not going to Meetings, you may want to consider Weight Watchers Online."

Yeah, we think it's kind of bogus, too, but at this time, your Lifetime membership to Weight Watchers won't give you a discount for the online portion. If you're going to meetings and keeping track of your food intake but you think you'd benefit from using Weight Watchers Online as well, we can offer you a 30% discount on three months if you click here. If you're thinking of switching diet plans, we review many others here.
