I have a wireless internet conection with AT&T. It's their router and Belkin Battery thing. Can I just plug into their equipment?

The following is an actual user-submitted question:

Q: I have a wireless internet conection with AT&T. It's their router and Belkin Battery thing. Can I just plug into their equipment? I assume VolP companies supply some interface.

A: Yes, your VoIP company will provide you with a converter which splits the Internet connection between your router and your telephone. As it is now, your router probably runs directly to a cable which plugs into the wall. With VoIP that cable will hit the converter first, then the router. You can call and surf the web simultaneously; the converter helps manage the traffic, turning your analog calls into digital packets which travel over the Internet.

Most VoIP companies provide the converters for free, or for a substantially reduced cost. For more information, check out our VoIP service reviews and comparisons.

About Skype on mobil. does the carrier (Verison) charge for minutes when you use your Skype?

  3. Kent Says:

The computer does not have to be on for you to make calls, but the router and converter do. Because of this VoIP will not work during a power or Internet outage.

Skype Mobile uses wi-fi to make connections over your home network. Because of this, there's no per-minute charge from your cell phone carrier. However, if you don't have unlimited usage with your home ISP (Internet Service Provider), there can be an extra charge for the data transfer. Most ISPs offer unlimited bandwidth for a flat rate, so it shouldn't be a problem.
