How can I use Vonage to block unwanted calls?

March 31st, 2010 - Posted by Tasha

The following is an actual user-submitted question:

Q:  How can I use Vonage to block unwanted calls?

A: Vonage provides several ways to block both inbound and outbound calls.  These features are included free of charge with your Vonage plan.  With Anonymous Call Block, you can block  inbound callers who aren't allowing their caller ID to be displayed.  These callers will hear an automated message indicating they need to disable their caller ID blocking and call back.  You can enable this feature either from your phone or your online account.

Activating the Do Not Disturb feature will cause all inbound calls to be sent to voice mail.  This is convenient if you'd like to take a nap, or if you just don't want to be disturbed by the sound of the phone ringing.  You can also set this up directly from your phone or via your online account.

Finally there's International and Directory Assistance Blocking.  If you don't want outbound calls made to international or directory assistance numbers, just login to your Vonage Online account and turn it on.  It's a great feature if you're having a party and don't want random (and possibly expensive) calls showing up on your bill.

At this time Vonage does not allow you to block specific inbound call numbers.  As always, you can easily reach Vonage at any time by calling their toll-free number:  888-692-8076.

Anonymous Call Block and Do Not Disturb services are insufficient to keep the persistent, annoying person or business from calling repeatedly. Please, Vonage, add a feature that allows a block for specific incoming calls. Otherwise, I will move my account at renewal.

  3. Charles Lewis Says:

We really need the ability to block a single number call that continously calls and hangs up.

  4. Jennifer A. Ray Says:

I've been a customer of Vonage for years and have been mostly satisfied except for this one glaring omission in their feature set. I've contacted them several times over the years asking for this feature, to no avail. My most recent contact to them regarding this met with no reply at all. This feature is what prompted me to look at Ooma. I am about 95% decided to move to Ooma in the next few months.

  5. Kathie K Says:

This has been going on long enough. Vonage, make the ability to block a single number possibe instead of just talking about how it's not possible "now" but maybe "in the future."

    PhoneTrayFree is a great tool
Thisis AWESOME for people using Vonage:
On their forums PhoneTrayFee is discussed. It's too cool, too easy to use and free. The two catches with it are that your computer has to have a (1) fax/data/VOICE modem and (2) have Caller ID (CID). For numbers that you don't want to hear from you can select from different responses including the generic "do-do-do 'We are sorry the number you have reached has been disconnected'". The beauty of this is that with those tones, it tells the machines that the number is disconnected so you won't hear from them again.

Those UnLike me who shut down their computer may not fully utilize the software though. Oh yeah, I love the feature that allows it to show the name and number that is calling on your computer screem. If you want to change the name from Smith, John… It can be done too easily.
