Social Security numbers of 50,000 Californians exposed
February 10th, 2010 - Posted by Kent
It seems that Californians have another reason to be angry with their government. On February 1st, the Department of California Health Care Services sent out 49,352 letters that mistakenly listed the recipient's name and Social Security number on the envelope. The mistake was realized and officials have since sent letters (presumably without social security numbers printed on the outside) to those affected, suggesting that they, "contact the three credit reporting agencies and place a fraud alert on their file."
Now, it may be time that we abandoned the use of the Social Security number as a personal identifier, but in the meantime being proactive about identity theft protection is the best way to save yourself from both identity thieves and bungling state bureaucrats.
