Why you do not include VIPRE in your reviews?

November 17th, 2009 - Posted by Kent

The following post in our Reader Question series is an actual user submitted question. To maintain the integrity of the original question, we do not edit or change reader questions in any way.

I need to download new antivirus protection and I am wondering why you do not include VIPRE in your reviews. Is it because it doesn't work as advertised? Just trying to choose the best.

A: We haven't gotten around to reviewing VIPRE yet. While we can't comment on its effectiveness as anti-virus software, it does not seem to have a built-in firewall. While VIPRE has a separate firewall module available for purchase, we tend to prefer products that offer the firewall as part of the full suite. The combined price of the VIPRE anti-virus and the firewall would push the price into the $50.00 range (or more, if you're looking for multiple licenses), putting it in the same price category as many of the suites we reviewed, such as McAfee. Some, such as BitDefender and ZoneAlarm are even cheaper.

  1. Nick Says:

That's actually incorrect. When you purchase VIPRE and the firewall, the firewall is only $10 per license. The more licenses you buy, the cheaper each one is. They also have a new version coming out. I heard they'll have a beta release of VIPRE Premium by the end of this month. VIPRE Premium is going to include an integrated firewall.

You do save, but as you add users, the cost goes up. Firewall and Antivirus for two users is $54.90, for three or more it's $79.90. So the cost really is about the same.

  3. Theresa Says:

I have heard very good things about the Viper. I have 3 lap tops and a desk top to secure, I need help picking the right security system. This one has my attention. any comments are welcome.

  4. Nick Says:

    Kent,

You also fail to mention that they have a unlimited site license. If you own 3 or more systems then the unlimited site license is a pretty amazing deal. It allows you to install both products on as many systems as you want.

  5. toni Says:

I saw it on HSN home shopping network and they are selling VIPRE antivirus software on a USB that is supposed to be for LIFETIME. Is that true? I can't find any evidence of this lifetime buy anywhere else. And the price is down to $79.99 rather than $99.99. Anyone care to comment?

We just like this site shown and that has provided myself a few sort of desire to succeed for some factor, so thanks.
