A 23-year-old New York man was recently arrested for charging tens of thousands of dollars on fraudulent credit cards in the names of a number of wealthy, high-profile men, including clothing designer Tommy Hilfiger, Dallas Mavericks owner Marc Cuban, and George Hornig, chief operating officer of investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston. The identity thief, Gregory Mortel, used the stolen credit cards to pay for expensive spa treatments and other luxuries. In a phone call that led to his arrest, Mortel stated that "nobody will ever be able to trace him to any wrongdoing." He was later arrested while enjoying a spa treatment at an Equinox gym, which he paid for using a credit card made out to Tommy Hilfiger.
If these notable icons can have their identities stolen, what hope do you have of avoiding such a fate? One of the best precautions you can take is to sign up for an identity theft protection service. To learn more about these types of services, see our reviews and comparison chart.
