Your VoIP provider needs your current address!

September 8th, 2008 - Posted by Caitlin

If you have VoIP and move, you need to provide your VoIP provider with your new address. Otherwise, 911 dispatchers will not be able to locate you in the event of emergency. Florida police were recently flummoxed by a mysterious 911 call from a family that had moved but never bothered to update Vonage with their new address. So make sure that 911 services can find you if you need help! Register your current address with your VoIP provider.

Thank you for blogging about this very important issue. I actually had a bad experience by not updating my address with iConnectHere (voip provider) just recently. After I moved my kids got a hold of the phone and accidentally speed dialed 911. Being too young to understand what they were doing they left the phone on and the police were dispatched to my old address just to make sure there was no emergency.

The fact is that you can actually move your VoIP setup anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. So your provider has no way of knowing your location so it's definitely important to update them.

Thanks for your comment, Casey. It sounds like your experience is relatively common among VoIP users. We appreciate your feedback!
