A team of researchers from the University of Washington and the University of California have released a new free laptop tracking service. The software, called Adeona, is downloaded onto a laptop and immediately begins sending signals containing the computer’s location over the Internet.

Should a laptop with Adeona installed ever be lost or stolen then the owner can simply download a second program on any other Internet connected computer. After entering a username and password to identify their account, the user can collect the information about their laptop’s whereabouts. A Mac version of the Adeona software can even take a picture of whoever is using the computer once it is lost or stolen. Adeona can be downloaded for free on the researcher’s website.

Our recent lost or stolen laptop recovery guide provided a series of tips for preventing and recovering from a lost or stolen laptop. One of those tips included using a laptop tracking service, so we are happy to see a free version of such software available to consumers. Hi Sluggo,

Thanks for stopping by and for the comment. You are right- the best thing that people can do to prevent laptop loss is to always be aware of their surroundings. Being conscious of the threat of laptop theft is one of the best ways to prevent it. A laptop should certainly never be left in any public place, such as a 7-11, hotel lobby or airport.

    Thanks,
