Some laptops have many numbers affixed to the bottom of the computer. Consider photocopying that and keeping it for future reference. Your Windows software (XP, Office, ...) serial number might be useful in tracking down the computer. I suggest recording the MAC (ethernet) addresses for the computer. These appear as 12 hex characters (0-9,a-f), either as 12:34:56:78:90:ab or 5678.90ab.cdef (NOTE: This is not an IP address such as 123.45.67.89) There will be a MAC address for the wired network, another for the wireless network (eg, 802.11g), and perhaps another for a USB network. These may be useful for identifying a laptop remotely, if the computer is connected directly to a network that will look for it.
