I tried this and it showed that I would get a 30 Day Free Trial all the way through to the end, when I had to call and confirm personal information. After I did that I received an email confirmation but no free trial and my credit card had been charged. The Equifax customer support said you should have a promotional code I could give them to get the 30 Day Free Trial. Can you give that to me.

Hi Peter- thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Great question. The law you are referencing is the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) which entitles each American to one free credit report per year.

The three major US credit bureaus created the site AnnualCreditReport.com (http://www.annualcreditreport.com) to allow consumers to order their free credit report. You can visit that site to learn more information on how to order your free credit report.

Keep in mind that this free credit report that you order from AnnualCreditReport.com will not include information about your credit score. And, because your credit report information is constantly changing, you will not always have access to the most recent information that lenders see.

This is the reason that many consumers opt to purchase a credit report monitoring service that provides access to credit reports and credit scores as well as monitoring of your credit file. Many of this services also offer a free credit report for those consumers that sign for or take a free trial of a credit monitoring service.

Here is one tip- if you sign up for a service that offers a free trial, and most of the best services do, you will get to keep your credit report and credit score even if you cancel your subscription to their service. This is a good way to get the information you are after and get try out credit report monitoring with no risk.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks,
Joe

It is my understanding there is a federal law that entitles me to an annual free credit report. However, any site I go to either requires payment for a one-time report, or subscribing to a "credit-watch" service, with a monthly fee. How am I getting my free credit report? How does this comply to the law?
