Data Breach Alert: Registration website exposes presidential primary voters to identity theft

March 20th, 2008 - Posted by Joe

A voter registration website for the upcoming Pennsylvania presidential primary was shut down this week after the personal information of as many as 30,000 individuals was exposed online.

The website allowed Pennsylvania residents to complete a voter registration form that could be printed out and mailed to state election officials.  A programming error made those forms, which included name, address, date of birth, driver license number and last four digits of social security number, publicly available on the web.

The Pennsylvania Department of State shut down the website as soon as the breach was discovered this week.
