Court decision will keep Vonage subscriber fees low
Posted by Joe on March 20th, 2008
A Nebraska judge ruled this week that Vonage will not be forced to pay a fee that is levied against traditional phone service providers.
Nebraska officials were attempting to force Vonage to pay into the state's Universal Services Fund. Traditional phone service providers are required to pay into the fund and the cost is usually passed on directly to the consumer. Proceeds are used to fund the expansion of telephone lines into rural areas of the state.
Because Vonage is an Internet based telephone service which doesn't use the traditional telephone infrastructure the court found that they were not required to pay the additional fees. Nebraska Public Utilities Commission officials have until April 2, 2008 to decide if they will appeal the courts decision.
This is excellent news for not only Vonage subscribers but all voip users since it will continue to keep fees low. Our research has shown that most voip subscribers already save hundreds of dollars per year versus traditional telephone service bills.
